Earlier picking, gentle whole bunch pressing with low extraction rates, using only free run juice, minimal additions and gravity feed directly to barrel for wild ferment with full solids, have all contributed to an elegant wine with a fine acid backbone, complexity, texture and well-integrated oak.
Awards and Accolades
95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Compainon Magazine "With its grapefruit, nectarine, nutty and gently vanillin aromas (from 10 months in 30% new French oak) there is a lot to like about this wine. The palate is equally good, and despite the initial richness on the palate, there is a nice line of acidity that runs through the wine keeping it perfectly balanced and composed."
94 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front "The last couple of releases have been on the leaner side; this release adds some weight. It’s an excellent move. It tastes of grapefruit, juicy pear and steel, both rich and seductive at once, before cedar wood and smoked spice notes lend a hand through the back half. It finishes with a cleansing rinse of acidity, but at no point is flavour left behind. This feels ripe and juicy throughout. This is a beautiful example of the chardonnay grape."
2015 Vintage: 96 Points, Special Value Wine - James Halliday, Wine Companion "This wine never fails. It's probably the immaculate viticulture that is most responsible, but you also get the feeling the winemaking team don't push the envelope any further than they are totally comfortable with, the most obvious outcome the extreme purity the wine always has."
From the Winery
The Parterre Chardonnay has been made from 100% Gin-Gin clone, which we feel produces fruit with higher acidity, and more intensity of flavour with later ripening. This also allows for picking at slightly lower Baume (potential alcohol), resulting in a wine with finer structure and more delicate fruit.
Our usual winter rainfall arrived early in the season, which then eased off in the later half and into spring. This provided the region with a warmer than average spring, and as a result predictions for another early vintage were being made. Rain returned in December, and the weather returned to normal through to the second week of January. Rain in mid-January had an immediate effect and recharged the dry sub-soils. As the fruit was still firm, quality wasn’t affected, and came into the winery clean, vibrant with layers of flavour.
