Cabernet has become the pride of Coonawarra thanks to the unique terra rossa soils of red soil over limestone imparting a distinctive mint and earthy taste to the reds of the region.
There’s plenty of blackcurrant fruit, a hint of mint and some integrated oak before a swathe of dark fruits sweep across the palate. Cedar and vanilla oak add interest before mouth-coating tannins fill out the lingering finish. This would benefit from being paired with a medium rare scotch fillet with a red wine jus.

From the Winery
The 2013 vintage in Coonawarra was noted for slightly warmer conditions and well below average rainfall especially throughout the later stages of the growing season. This led to an earlier than usual vintage with Cabernet Sauvignon fruit that showed intense colour and excellent fruit concentration.
Maturation for 13 months in 50% French (10% new) and 50% older American oak barriques has added complexity and suppleness
Wayne Stehbens, a veteran of over thirty Coonawarra vintages, has markedly refined the style. His philosophy is to capture varietal distinction and regional excellence, with complementary oak and maturation flavours. Bottled under screwcap, Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon typically shows ripe middle palate focus with intense blackcurrant mulberry aromas, generous pure-fruit flavours, finely grained tannins, underlying mocha notes and excellent flavour length. The wines have an outstanding reputation for medium to long term cellaring.
Noted as one of the nation's leading Cabernet Sauvignons, this wine is listed in the "Distinguished" category of Australia's prestigious Langton's Classification, which says of the style: Katnook Cabernet Sauvignon reflects its strong Coonawarra provenance with plenty of intense blackcurrant mulberry fruit definition, mid palate richness, finely grained tannins and excellent flavour length. The wines have medium to long term cellaring potential."
