91 POINTS: James Halliday.

Appearance: Deep purple with crimson red hue.

Bouquet: Black berries and cherries, hints of violets with Chocolate and Mocha characters from the oak.

Palate: Rich dark fruit, well integrated mocha oak combined with fine tannins add richness to ensure a lingering palate full of flavour.

Vintage Conditions: The lead up to the 2009 harvest in the Riverina was one of the best on record, with refreshing rains during spring and mild December temperatures. This led to fruit with flavour intensity and acid structure not seen for a few years. This all changed at the end of January with an unprecedented heat wave of plus 40 degrees for 14 days which saw ripening stall for 3 weeks. Overall the vintage was good to excellent.

Winemaking: Fruit was selected by the winemaker and picked when the dark fruits flavour and sugars were at their optimum to express the varietal flavours of Petit Verdot. Cold soaked at 10°C for 24 hours to help with colour and flavour extraction. Allowed to warm and fermented for 7–10 days at 18 - 22°C.

  4 Silver medals.
8 Bronze medals including Decanter World Wine Awards.

"Twenty per cent of juice was run-off before fermentation, adding to the fruit profile but without unbalancing the tannins; good plum and black fruit flavours." - James Halliday.

This is a really interesting wine. Grapes are sourced from a vineyard close to Bendigo. They have just 5 acres of Mourvedre which they grow on, E'vette's Block. While most wineries prefer to use this as a blending grape, Terra Felix think it deserves to be produced as a single variety. On each of their labels they incorporate a little poetry and the words on the Mourvedre describe it well,

Mouvedre is most often blended in France with Grenache and Shiraz and often because traditional laws regulate that. But in Australia Winemakers are free to say why? What does it taste like on its own? So it’s only in New World Winemaking that sometimes free expression results in a whole new way of thinking about a grape variety. That is why when making this wine we did as little as possible to see what sort of natural flavours were there. And what a result! Unique aromatic spicy flavours that have a strong savoury slant are revealed. Mourvedre has high levels of natural acid so modern winemaking technology lent a hand with the use of micro-oxygenation. This involves carefully drip feeding tiny amounts of oxygen into the wine to enable it to soften and be approachable in a reasonable time. The Winemaker controls the process and if you like, dials up the mouthfeel to balance the savoury flavours.

Zonte's Footstep Violet Beauregard Malbec 2009

Zontes Footstep Violet Bauregard Malbec 2009.gif
"Strong purple-crimson; rich and supple black fruits of every description, with a touch of dark chocolate lurking in the cracks, makes for a wine that one writer of note would describe as slurpable. Screwcap.14% alc. Rating 91" - James Halliday

Colour:
Blueberries, and when we say blue blueberries, we mean blue berries. This is intense, mouth staining colour.

Nose:
Again blueberries. Also classic Malbec mulberry, ready rubbed shag tobacco and blonde pipe tobacco. Wild cherries and wafts of violets. Hints of just baked pastry too.

Entry:
Attacking, intense, super youthful and grapey, again lots of blueberries. Almost overwhelming.

Middle Palate:
Generous, flavoursome, quite sensual and structured despite the lashings of fresh fruit. Really rich.

After Palate:
Flavoursome, rich, sweet berry fruits; plum is on top of rolling red fruits. Blueberry pie!

Finish:
The finish is serious and mouth filling and the glycerol sweetness is balanced by supple tannins and a soft fresh acidity.

In Summary:
This is the seventh consecutive vintage of Zonte’s Footstep wine with Malbec in it, but the first to be released as a 100% Malbec. Sensual and structured this is our ideal Malbec, the only problem being how we can keep some long enough to watch it evolve in bottle.

  A Mano Rosato 2010

A Mano Rosato.gif
This year our Rosato is an “uvaggio”: Italian for blend.

Our biggest challenge every year is finding the perfect vineyard for A.Mano Rosato. The grapes have to be fully flavored even if not fully mature. The color must be perfect and vibrant. This year we selected a Primitivo vineyard, and since we have proudly restored the ancient tradition of blending some Aleatico in our Primitivo it seemed natural to do the same with our Rosato.

The Primitivo we selected for our Rosato comes from avery special vineyard that is in the windiest location of very windy Puglia. It is high up on a hillside, dry farmed and over 30 years old. The grapes at the beginning of September showed gorgeous strawberry and rose petal notes. We loved them! The Aleatico comes from a rolling hillside vineyard on the ridge that drops down to the Ionian sea. It contributes a floral perfume and really brings out the best in Primitivo. The grapes were crushed, pressed, settled and fermented at very low temperatures. The cold fermentation (7°C) retains all the delicacy and perfume of the grapes. The carbon dioxide from fermentation is “trapped” and the wine shows a lively spritz. A.Mano Rosato will bring spring to your home.

Try it with light cuisine but for a real adventure pair A.Mano Rosato with the spicy dishes of the world, be they Italian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican or Indian! This is a full-bodied rosè with all the flavor reward of a red wine combined with the delicacy and freshness of a delicious white.

A Mano Primitivo 2010.gif
Primitivo has been grown in Puglia (the heel of the boot) since time immemorial; it was first registered as a monoculture vineyard in 1799. Primitivo has historically been grown as “alberello” (head trained) where yields are very low and the fruit is completely exposed to sunlight for the entire growing season. The best vineyards have a crumbly dark reddish brown soil that resembles instant coffee. These ancient vineyards have evolved strong native yeast.

A Mano Primitivo is fermented very cold using its own wild yeast. Unique in this region, the grapes were fermented at 60°F in order to retain the raspberry aromas and freshness. After fermentation it rested in French (80%) and American (20%) barrels. The flavors of blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and plums are all carried by a subtle, sweet, toasted oak flavor. The finish is soft and long with very graceful tannins and a beautiful body.

Magpie Estate The Black Sock Mourvedre 2007

Magpie Estate The Black Sock Mourvedre 2007.gif
Rolf Binder and Noel Young saw the creation of Magpie Estate as the chance to create something a little unique and different. The Magpie philosophy is to poke fun at wine pretention and to make wine that are good to drink, not wine created just for show. All the wines come from the Barossa Valley and the Magpie expression changes from label to label and from vintage to vintage.

The grapes used for Magpie Estate wines are from some of the better vineyards in South Australia, as well as the estate's own. Noel likes more new oak than you would find in the estate grown Rolf Binder and Veritas wines. Together, twice a year, Rolf and Noel taste the various parcels of wine and agree on final blends for bottling.

The Mourvedre grape produces wonderfully rich, rustic flavoured wines with a sumptuous texture. This wine is full bodied with a ripe palate of black cherries, cinnamon, clove, pepper, meat, & creamy oak.

Torzi Matthews Vigna Cantina Negro Amaro 2010.gif
“The tireless and ebullient Dominic Torzi, armed with Tracy Matthews, somehow makes what are the most determined and distinctive wines at impossible prices. (...). It’s vivid proof that you can get plum pudding and exmess cake aromas without overt alcohol, and with natural acidity that extends the peal of every bell in the village. It’s alarming in its liveliness and cheek: a pie of the brightest red, black and blue berries powdered with caster sugar and soused in kirsch or grappa. But while the steaming pastry is crumbly with nutmeg, the fruits don’t appear to have been cooked at all: they’re inside, fresh and cool. Somewhere between an enigma and a dilemma. Perfectly entertaining. Blackbirds fly out.”
Philip White, InDaily News, June 2011

Vintage
Great winter rains with the best falls in 5 years gave the site a great start with lovely balanced canopy to shade the intense small crop. A moderate summer with lovely cooling nights heading into harvest on March 13 presented pristine hand picked fruits.

Wine making
Made via a mixture of whole berry and 20% whole bunch wild yeast ferment in small open top fermenters, soft pump overs, basket pressed and bottled unfiltered.

Style
A truly charismatic red table wine with highly perfumed red summer fruits with real freshness both to the fruit and in the mouth feel, expect wonderfully spicy red fruits with complex bitter chocolate dipped apricots, black tea, cherries, plum, provincial herbs and fine-grained tannins to finish. A wine truly suited to richly red sauced dishes, cured meats and a must with pizza.

Georges Duboeuf Moulin a Vent 2008

Georges Duboeuf Moulin a vent.gif
A floral red wine of remarkable length, the moulin à vent (windmill) is named after a 15th Century grain mill that overlooks the appelation in which the Gamay grapes grow.

Fleshy yet complex spicy flavours give a background to the traditional violet and cherry one expects from Gamay grapes. A lovely wine from a lovely part of the world.

Gamay noir is now known to be a cross of Pinot noir and the ancient white variety Gouais, the latter a Central European variety that was probably introduced to northeastern France by the Romans. The grape brought relief to the village growers following the decline of the Black Death. In contrast to the Pinot Noir variety, Gamay ripened two weeks earlier and was less difficult to cultivate. It also produced a strong, fruitier wine in a much larger abundance. In July 1395, the Duke of Burgundy Philippe the Bold outlawed the cultivation of Gamay as being "a very bad and disloyal plant", due in part to the variety occupying land that could be used for the more "elegant" Pinot Noir. Sixty years later, Philippe the Good, issued another edict against Gamay in which he stated the reasoning for the ban is that "The Dukes of Burgundy are known as the lords of the best wines in Christendom. We will maintain our reputation".[2] The edicts had the effect of pushing Gamay plantings southward, out of the main region of Burgundy and into the granite based soils of Beaujolais where the grape thrived. - wikipedia.

  Georges Duboeuf Fleurie 2009

Georges Duboeuf Fleurie.gif
Allegedly named after a Roman legionary, grapes for the Fleurie are picked from gently sloping hills 450m above sea level.

Intensely crimson in colour and reverberating with a bouquet of violets, roses, red berries and peaches, the Fleurie is an elegant wine, sometimes described as 'feminine'.

Duboeuf is a name synonymous with top quality Beaujolais, so much so that Georges Duboeuf has been described as "Le Roi de Beaujolais" (The King of Beaujolais). The wines have great individuality and drinkability. The fresh vibrant flavours of Beaujolais Villages are perfect for our climate and our cuisine. The famous 'crus' of Beaujolais offer wines of different terriors that can age gracefully. Most importantly, Beaujolais is about the unpretentious enjoyment of wine and of life.

The 2008 Catena Malbec shows a dark violet colour with deep bluish - black tones. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark fruit aromas with delicate floral notes and traces of vanilla and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and lush, with concentrated black cherry and red currant fruit flavors layered with sweet spices, tobacco and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, supple tannins with bright, crisp acidity and a flinty minerality which gives the wine exceptional length.

The fruit for the Catena Malbec undergoes a short pre-fermentation, cold maceration for 5 days at a temperature of 48° F. This process allows for excellent extraction of aromas and color. The juice is then fermented between 75 - 80°F. These moderate temperatures allow for wonderful mid-palate extraction while avoiding any harsh or bitter tannins.

The wine is aged in a blend of French and American oak for 12 months, with 35% new oak adding wonderful layers of complexity.

  Yangarra McLaren Vale Mourvedre 2009

Yangarra Mourvedre.gif
"They make some really good booze at Yangarra. This one’s a beauty. Ripe, luscious, leathery, earthen, minerally and laden with oodles of chocolatey, plummy, tarry fruit. There’s a sure slip of creamy, toasty oak here too but the fruit has it well and truly covered. Exquisite tannin. Adorable drinking. 93 Points." - Campbell Mattinson.

The key to Yangarra's unique flavours is a large, smooth dune of Ngankipari Sand, a precisely-delineated Aeolian, or wind-blown geological formation that was laid down about a million years ago (which is very young in Australia's ancient geology). This sand is an extremely weathered remnant of mountain ranges that stood here 1.6 billion years ago, weathered away, and then rose again 500 million years ago. After a second weathering, the current ranges began to rise about 100 million years ago.

Yangarra Estate covers 420 acres, 250 acres of which is vineyard. About 170 acres of the vineyard are Grenache and Shiraz, much of it comprised of old bush vines planted in 1946.

The heart of Yangarra is the ancient wind-blown dune of grey Ngankipari Sand. This sand is not marine, like the nearby coastal sands, but the totally weathered remains of a mighty mountain range long gone. This sand lies over various types of moisture-retentive clays with sporadic ironstone outcrops. The locals call this glorious sandy slope The Beach.

Morlanda Vi de Guarda.gif
So, trying Spanish wine need not take you to just the cheap end of imports! Here is a master wine equivalent rating to DOCG in Italy of a wine that displays all the Old world quality and winemaking skills with a luscious Grenache blend.

50% garnacha negra
50% cariñena

All the grapes used are from vineyards situated in mountains 150-400m above sea level. It is from the highest of these peaks (Morlanda) that these wines take their name. Fermentation is carried out using a traditional method of maceration and pumping over. The wine is then bottled and stored for a further six months until fully matured.

Morlanda is produced by Viticultors del Priorat, whose winery is located in Bellmunt del Priorat (Tarragona) and falls under the Priorat Appellation of Origin. The property lies between hills, of which Morlanda is the highest and thus the name of the wine. The winery was founded in 1997 and is located on a 72-hectare estate, 22 of which are vineyards.

Some of the vineyards are located on slopes and others are located on flatter terrain at altitudes of 190–220 metres above sea level. Most Morlanda wines are produced from vines aged between 25 and 40 years old, though some are younger and others have only recently been planted.

Vinum Chianti 6416 15.gif
From its beginnings in northern Bohemia down to this day, for 11 generations and 250 years, Riedel Glass has stood for the high art of glassmaking. So much more than mere receptacles, Riedel decanters and glasses are imbued with the idiosyncrasies of the wine they are charged to accentuate, turning wine consumption into a graceful, prosaic experience.

Introduced in 1986, Vinum was the first machine-made series of glasses in history to be based exclusively on the characteristics of quality, reasonable price and wide distribution.

Vinum has had a permanent impact on the globe's wine glass culture. These glasses have proved to consumers and restaurateurs that the pleasure of consuming wine starts with the glass.

The Vinum collection, developed by Georg Riedel on the principle that the content commands the shape, is the "Vitrum-Vinothek" for every day use.

Vinum is made of over 24% lead crystal.

In 1973, in Orvieto, Claus Riedel presented the world's first gourmet glass series developed with the help of the Associazione Italiana Sommeliers (A.I.S.). The series consisted of 10 sizes. Since then the world of wine has changed radically.

Today, regions and continents are producing wines that didn't exist or were unknown 25 years ago. The Sommeliers series was developed further by his son Georg, into an all-embracing state-of-the-art wine glass collection. Praised in 1991 by Robert Parker, Jr., publisher of The Wine Advocate, as "The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel.

The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference they make." Thanks to worldwide demand, Sommeliers is now the wineglass benchmark and the most successful series of hand-made glasses in the world. Each glass is individually made: the upper parts blown into a mould, the stem and base hand-crafted using methods developed at the time of Christ's birth.

Our glass-makers invest their talent, know-how and meticulous craftsmanship in making glasses of the impeccable quality our consumers expect. Sommeliers are executed in over 24% lead crystal.
