Clarendon Hills Kangarilla Grenache 2006 |
| |
|
|
Ripe cherry, strawberry and a violet character dominate the nose. Recessed and spice driven – the Kangarilla vineyard is elegant and light on its feet.
Focused and precise, the primary influence is evident in the structure and the bright acidity ensures this will be a keeper.
Low yielding, dry grown 86 y/o vines are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises bitter tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled onsite without fining or filtration..
18 months, within a hierarchy of 1-5 year old tightly grained French Oak. Barrels are finally hand selected by winemaking team.
The 2006 vintage in Clarendon is best surmised as a Mediterranean finish to what was otherwise a typical Australian summer. The earlier onset of Autumnal coolness slowed ripening towards the end of the harvest season and enhanced colour development and enriched skin thickness ensued. The Kangarilla vineyard is dry grown in gravelly soils. Hand picking took place over several passes to ensure optimal ripeness of the fruit.
This wine forms part of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Premier Cru’ classification.
The most densely structured of the Grenache’s thus far. Recessed and slow to emerge from its shell – The Kangarilla vineyard offers majesty in both extension and girth. The depth of savoury, but fresh fruit within the extract remains with this vineyard for well over 15 years. Cleanliness and character define this site. More backward than the Blewitt Springs or Onkaparinga – it is almost the slowest maturing wine in the varietal domain.
