Schwarz Thiele Road Grenache 2009 |
| |
|
|
Colour: Medium red with purple flashes.
Nose: The wine displays a fragrant lifted nose of black cherry and plum with lighter tones of redcurrant and red cherry. There are also aromas of baking spice, gingerbread, red licorice and Barossan earth with some lovely floral facets of jasmine, violets and a waft of musk.
Palate: Medium-bodied on the palate with an earthen streak and fine line. Ripe, rich black and red cherry fruits meld with macerated summer fruits with a touch of raspberry lift. Plenty of Asian spice rears its head along with hints of jasmine blossom, earth, red licorice, ginger cake and subtle, seasoned oak nuance. The finish is persistent, the acid line balanced and lively and the tannin structure, super ripe, fine-grained and chalky as it melts in your mouth.
The vineyard is spur pruned to reduce vigor and bunch density. Typically small berries and open bunches are this vineyard's characters. Grenache was one of the stars from 2009 with the fantastic colours, aromas and flavours that we saw in the vineyard, looking awesome through fermentation and elevage and finally….brilliant in the bottle.
Handpicked on the 6th April, 2009 the fruit was destemmed and crushed into an open fermenter. Soaked until natural yeast started the ferment process. Given a soft pump over and one hand plunge per day to prevent over extraction of the fruit, once the primary ferment had finished care was taken with only one soft plunge per day. After 17 days on skins it was Basket Pressed on the 24/4/09 and filled to wood on the 28/4/09. The wine was then racked to tank in November 2010 to maintain freshness until bottling.
