Katnook Founder's Block Merlot 2005 |

Yummy! A big powerful Plum red with light purple tinges that takes your breath away from the start. The nose is all vanilla marshmallow oak on the nose melds well with boysenberry fruit to create a nice ripple with bright macerated summer pudding fruits. Palate - On the palate the oak is more cedar like with lovely purple fruits with nice medium bodied palate weight and grippy tannins that hang on for dear life. Coonawarra built its international wine reputation on its great combination of cool climate, renowned terra rossa soil and the grapes that revel in these two fantastic influences. This part of the world is also prime lamb and beef country and like the best regional cultures around the world, the local wines and the local produce are a perfect match. Katnook Founder’s Block Merlot is just begging to be consumed with a lamb that has sacrificed its soul to the wine gods, just so you can enjoy the ultimate food and wine match. Don’t feel guilty though – that would be un-Australian. Vintage - 2005 vintage followed a long dry and cooler than average summer. This ideal growing season initiated earlier than expected maturities and approximately two weeks earlier than usual. The resulting wines have very good colour, good varietal distinction and generous soft palate structures. Oak Maturation - Matured in small oak barrels (mostly American) over approximately 18 months of which 10% were new. Cellaring - This wine will benefit from medium term cellaring of 4 to 6 years. Food Matching - Ideal with terra rosa lamb.
