Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 2006 |

|
A wine of impeccable quality and legendary status; an absolute icon of Australian fine wine. Imbued with the integrity of old vines, the meticulous character of a unique vineyard and the expertise of a master winemaker, The Armagh sits shoulder to shoulder with Grange, Run Rig, Hill of Grace et al.
5 Stars & 97/100 - Nick Stock, The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010.
"Inky crimson-purple; laden with voluptuous, but not jammy or dead, fruit in a blackberry, licorice and prune range, the tannins remarkably soft for a full-bodied wine, oak unobtrusive. Cork. 96 Points." - James Halliday.
The 2006 Armagh is dense and purple in colour. It is an elegant and aristocratic kaleidoscope of aromas, an abundance of fruit flavours; blackberry, mulberry and blueberry with supporting complexity of mint, eucalypt, rhubarb, turkish delight and cinnamon. The palate is a rich tapestry of enjoyment and fulfillment with flavours of raspberry, strawberry and boysenberry with the closing argument of star anise, rosemary, spearmint and clove.
This wine hand crafted with the Jim Barry philosophy to be enjoyed upon release but demands a long sleep in the cellar to allow the wine to demonstrate all that it beholds.
The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 and yields less than two tonnes per acre. The soil is sandy-gravel and receives an average rainfall of 24 inches per year. The vineyard lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked.
2006 was a very successful vintage, producing high quality wines. Conditions during the growing season were favourable with good winter and spring rains. While January was quite hot, the vines remained in excellent condition due to mild conditions in the preceding months. Vintage started quite early, with most fruit picked by the end of March.
Wine has been growing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the culture. It is one of Australia’s most prestigious premium wine regions famous for its Riesling and Shiraz. A tiny area accounting for less than 1.5% of the total Australian production. With its beautiful rolling hills, ideal winter rainfall and Mediterranean climate, the Clare Valley carries a unique history and winemaking heritage.
The name of ‘Armagh’ was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hill after their homeland.
