  Stone Gully Chenin Blanc 2009

Stone Gully Chenin Blanc.gif
This is a fresh, fragrant Chenin Blanc made ready for wide appeal. The wine is dry, clean, crisp and medium bodied.

The Darling Ranges are old ancient land forms which flank the Indian Ocean for several hundred kilometres. These hills are filled with small stone lined gullies. The small to medium sized granite stones sparkle from where they were exposed to the elements for thousands of years. The label has been named with this in mind.

Stone Gully is designed to appeal to the young wine consumer, with its assortment of fruity varieties. This label allows the young palate to develop with confidence while still drinking award winning wines.

Geoff Hardy Hand Crafted Savagnin 2010

HC Savagnin 2010.gif
Top of Class Savagnin (Alternate Varieties Wine Show 2010 – Top of Class out of 18 entries)!

Savagnin is a very curious Southern European variety very closely related to Traminer (it is know also as White Traminer). It’s renowned more for ‘flor’ sherry styles of wine where it is picked very late in the season. In recent years it is more often being made into dry white table wine and shows a multi layered flavour spectrum with excellent length and good aging characteristics.

This single varietal wine is from our Angas Vineyard in Langhorne Creek where the 2010 crop was of outstanding quality creating complex stone fruit varietal aromas and an attractive nuttiness on the palate.

  Dowie Doole Chenin Blanc 2011

Dowie Doole Chenin Blanc 2011.gif
"More from this wonderfully named winery.
A mix of sweet juicy apple, citrus and tropical fruit with some grassy/herbaceous character. It’s lively and even, fresh and sweetly fruited with an appropriate cut of flinty acidity and a decent finish. Attractive. " - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Almost water white with pale green straw hues.

Fresh, lively aromas of green apple, citrus, white flowers and a dash of stem ginger.

The aromas follow through onto the palate with a burst of delicate white fruit and citrus flavours, a lovely, long palate and crisp minerally acidity to round it off. The perfect 'alternative' blanc!

Vintage 2011 was much cooler, a little damper and much later than anything we have experienced for some years. There was some disease pressure from botrytis. The Tintookie and Wymond vineyards with their free draining soils, good open canopies (to allow for air circulation) and low crop levels, once again produced fine varietal fruit with lovely flavours and excellent acidity. These features were accompanied by slightly lower than usual alcohol; a result of the cooler vintage. Harvest took place on the 29th March just over 4 weeks later than in 2010.

Umani Ronchi Verdicchio Villa Bianchi 2010

Umani Ronchi Verdicchio Villa Bianchi 2010.gif
This is a wine which takes its name from the farmhouse of the same name, nestling in the heart of the cultivation area of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi which the Bianchi family used to make by vinifying the grapes from the surrounding vineyard.

Today Villa Bianchi aims to express all the typical features of Verdicchio by bringing out in particular its aromatic notes of freshness and elegance. This is all achieved by careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard, and through the use of vinification techniques aimed at preserving intact the aromatic character inherent in the variety.

Brilliant straw yellow colour with greenish tints. Bouquet fine and intense, fruity and floral. To the taste, the wine demonstrates a pleasant structure based on vibrant and fresh notes, followed by a typically almond aftertaste and refreshing tingle.

Paul Conti The Tuarts Chenin Blanc 2009

Paul Conti Tuarts Chenin Blanc.gif
The bouquet exhibits lifted tropical fruit flavours with hints of citrus. The generous round palate is enhanced by fresh natural acidity and a long clean finish.

Fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and lightly pressed with only the finest free-run juice and minimal pressings used in the blend. Cold settled and fermented cool in stainless steel before blending and bottling, the wine spent 6 weeks on lees before fining which adds weight to the middle palate. The wine was bottled mid-June 2010.

The Maritime influences at The Tuarts Vineyard Carabooda, have contributed in producing a full flavoured but soft chenin blanc. The limestone based soils are a major contributing factor in producing wines of clean, fresh acidity on our vineyard which is entirely spur-pruned and hand harvested. As always, as small addition of Tony Mann’s chenin blanc is also included in the blend to achieve extra body.

  Villa Antinori Bianco Toscana 2009

Antinori Bianco Toscana.gif
70% Trebbiano and Malvasia, 30% Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio.

This wine presents itself to the eye with a straw-golden color. The wine opens with full, complex aromas touched by floral notes and hints of candied fruit. In the mouth the wine is well-balanced, full-bodied, and has a long aromatic finish. It is very smooth and pleasant to drink.

The 2009 growing year in Tuscany was characterized by a cool and rainy spring which slowed down both the sprouting and the flowering processes of the plants. The summer presented fairly hot temperatures, which at the end of August exceeded seasonal averages. The first several days of September were rainy while the following weeks brought some sunny days and average temperatures which allowed the vines to achieve a phenolic equilibrium which then, in turn, caused the grapes to ripen optimally.

The harvested grapes were destemmed and gently crushed. The grape must was then cooled down to a temperature of 10°C in order to encourage a natural clarification of the wine. After approximately two days, the must was transferred to stainless steel tanks, where alcoholic fermentation took place at temperatures not exceeding 18°C. The wine was then kept in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 10°C in order to protect its aromas and freshness. Consequently, the wine was bottled.

Villa Antinori was first produced with the vintage of 1931 by Niccolò Antinori. Since then, the label has practically remained unaltered, just like the company's philosophy of wine-production, fingerprinted with "Tuscanity".

  d'Arenberg 'Money Spider' Roussanne 2009

d
The aroma is filled with flowers, yellow peach, banana and lemon alongside cashew and hazel nut. Given time to open in the glass further nuances of orange blossom, pine needle and toffee emerge.

The taste delivers on the promise of the nose with green mango adding to the tropical spectrum. Ginger spice and citrus peel emerge on the back palate, providing great length to the mineral palate. It has a creamy feel and coats the mouth while holding acidity from beginning to end, delivering a very balanced and complete wine.

Sufficient winter rains set up the vines well with good canopies. December and most of January was very cool with only three days above 30°C until late in the month. Then there was a string of days above 40°C which caused some loss of yield. However there was little negative affect on quality and the mild weather that followed. This allowed the vines to recover and finish ripening in low stress conditions and the resulting wines are showing strong varietal characters.

The first crop of Roussanne from the 2000 vintage was covered in a sea of tiny “Money Spiders” (Erigoninae). Popular belief is that kindness to these little creatures will bring good luck, hopefully in the form of money. Being nature-lovers and slightly superstitious, Chester refrained from sending the spiders to their death. Hence the first release of Roussanne was from the 2001 vintage, by which time the “Money Spiders” had learned their lesson and moved from the vineyard to the surrounding bushland.

Hugel & Fils Alsace Pinot Blanc 2009

Hugel Pinot Gris.gif
Not only a fabulous vintage in Alsace but, just like in 1990, also a great vintage all over Europe.

This was a rich but harmonious vintage, with record levels of ripeness, enabling the winery to produce a full range of wines including, for the first time since 2001, both Riesling VT and SGN.

It is the most approchable wine of Alsace and also the most consistent year in year out. Not far in style from an unoaked Chardonnay such as a Macon or Chablis

Harvested in the first days of harvest, exclusively by hand, from clay and limestone vineyards in a dozen of the most favoured localities in and around Riquewihr.

The grapes are taken in small tubs to the presses, which are filled by gravity, without any pumping or other mechanical intervention.
After pressing, the must is decanted for a few hours, then fermented in temperature-controlled barrels or vats (at 18 to 24°C). The wine is racked just once, before natural clarification during the course of the winter. The following spring, the wine is lightly filtered just before bottling, and the bottles are then aged in our cellars until released for sale.
The whole production of this wine is closed with DIAM the cork without the risk of cork taint.

  Oliver's Taranga Fiano 2011

Olivers Taranga Fiano 2010.gif
"4/5 STARS. This Italian variety is showing increasing interest and Oliver's has been one of its champions with its latest release showing properly distinctive personality from start to finish. A fino-like aroma that the winemaker describes as "pine nuts and lemon rind" is bang on, but more happens on the palate with decent medium-bodied weight and texture filling the mouth. Captivating." - Tony Love, Herald Sun, August 2011."

The 2011 Fiano is finally here! A wet vintage provided some challenges in terms of disease, but the Fiano variety seems to be extremely resistant from mildews and botyritis. The fruit and the vines looked stunning, and we are excited to bring this 2011 Fiano to you.

Fiano is a relatively new variety to Australia, and originates from the Campagna region of Italy. This is Oliver's 4th vintage of Fiano and they love working with it.  A very interesting variety, being able to maintain acidity in the grapes, even in South Australian summers.

This minimal intervention Fiano is made with indigenous yeasts, and has no added acid. The 2011 Fiano has been made without the use of oak.

Laurenz V Singing Gruner Veltliner 2010

Laurenz V Singing Gruner Veltliner 2009.gif
A very attractive fruit bouquet yields apple, peach and citrus aromas along with a typical Veltliner spiciness and a touch of white pepper. The soft and juicy palate is supported by fine acidity. It sings on the palate!

Origin
The grapes for this Veltliner are grown mainly in loess and gravel soils of the Kremstal region. Their distinctive fruitiness is owed to marked alternating temperatures of the north-south positioned Kremstal: warm air rising from the Danube valley is met by cool air flowing down from the nearby Waldviertel region and along the Krems river. While this warmth influences ripeness and concentrated aromas, the coolness lends strongly to the fresh fruitiness. Thanks to the adding of some Veltliner grapes from the Weinviertel, the wine takes on a light fizzy character.

Vinification
Vintage 2010 – A challenge
The nature of the weather patterns during the recent 2010 vintage demanded prompt decisions, both at the harvest and throughout vinification. The 2010 wines display attractive aromas with a fruit-driven style, combined with varietal character and a lean structure. The warming, late summer days during early October contributed to a long-awaited final ripening of the grapes. The harvest began relatively late, during the first week of October, and lasted for most of that month. A long ripening season, coupled with overall lower natural sugar levels, have resulted in low to moderate alcohol by volume and fresh, crisp acidity, making the wines remarkably easy to drink. The grapes were gently pressed and the temperature controlled fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, in order to preserve freshness and fruit driven aromas. Though characterized by less quantity, 2010 has borne wines of a high quality level showing typical “Austrian” Gruner Veltliner characters with bright and intense fruit and stimulating “zip”.

  Yangarra McLaren Vale Roussanne 2009

Yangarra Roussanne.gif
Vibrant spicy and savoury aromatics and stone fruit flavours; Yangarra Roussanne offers seductive perfume with layers of creamy French pears, fresh peaches and a refreshing acidity.

Roussanne plantings are rare in South Australia. In 2003, we grafted Roussanne over Cabernet Sauvignon roots with vine cuttings from our McLaren Vale neighbor, D’Arenberg. Our Roussanne is planted on a ridge in the northeastern corner of our estate. The soils are weathered sands mixed with ironstone gravels and the climate is slightly cooler than the McLaren Vale basin thanks to breezes that waft daily off the bordering Mount Lofty Range. A single-wire VSP (vertical shoot positioned) system regulates the amount of sunlight reaching the leaves and grapes.

Yangarra Estate covers 420 acres, 250 acres of which is vineyard. About 170 acres of the vineyard are Grenache and Shiraz, much of it comprised of old bush vines planted in 1946.

The heart of Yangarra is the ancient wind-blown dune of grey Ngankipari Sand. This sand is not marine, like the nearby coastal sands, but the totally weathered remains of a mighty mountain range long gone. This sand lies over various types of moisture-retentive clays with sporadic ironstone outcrops. The locals call this glorious sandy slope The Beach.

A very attractive fruit bouquet yields apple, peach and citrus aromas along with a
typical Veltliner spiciness and a touch of white pepper. The soft and juicy palate is
supported by fine acidity. So harmonious and perfect to drink. A very palatefriendly
wine.

Origin
The grapes for this very friendly Veltliner are grown mainly in the Kamptal region
of Austria. Here, the Grüner Veltliner ripens in granite, gneiss, mica-slate as well
as loess soils. The cold air from the north, the rugged Waldviertel, lowers night
temperatures substantially; this gives the wines a fresh and fruity taste. Thanks
to the adding of some Veltliner grapes from the Kremstal the wine takes on a
very balanced and friendly character. Grown on mainly loess and gravel soils, that
determines the structure of the wine, the Kremstal grapes get their fruitiness from
warm air rising from the Danube valley met by cool air flowing down from the nearby
Waldviertel region and along the Krems river. While this warmth influences ripeness
and concentrated aromas, the coolness lends strongly to the fresh fruitiness.

Yalumba The Virgilius Eden Valley Viognier 2009

Yalumba The Virgilius Eden Valley Viognier 2009.gif
"Vibrant colour, green hue; has a great pedigree and the evolution of style is fascinating. Foregoing opulence for restraint, the bouquet offers a complex array of blanched almonds, cinnamon, clove and the typical apricot kernel of the variety; the palate is tightly wound, super fresh and long, and the acidity is incredibly fine, almost taking it into top chardonnay territory; superbly constructed. Rating:95" - James Halliday

"I’m not a noted fan of viognier but this edition of The Virgilius is very, very good.

Such a tight, precise wine. It has power and opulence but the rein is held very tight. Ginger, shell grit, melon, coconut, pips and stones. Terrific length. Composure all over. A tip-top white wine. Rated : 94 Points" Campbell Mattinson, The WIne Front.

Hand-picked grapes were whole-bunch pressed directly to barrels, and the juice handled with passive oxidation. The wine was fermented in mostly mature French oak barriques by a population of naturally occurring and differing species of yeast indigenous to the environment of the vineyard. In these wild ferments each yeast played a small and subtly different part in the development of the wine, creating layers of richness, complexity, fine textures and flavours. After fermentation the wine was aged on lees with regular batonage for 11 months to further heighten the palate weight and increase the complexity and flavour generosity. At blending only the finest barrels were chosen for the final wine.

A pale gold with green highlights, The Virgilius Viognier 2009 exhibits intense aromas on the nose of white peaches, apricots and ginger. Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral texture and complex apricots and white stone fruit flavours. The trademark Viognier lusciousness is clearly evident in this wine, which is unctuous and complex while at the same time showing restraint. While showing all the virtues of great Viognier as a young wine, The Virgilius will reward medium term cellaring as it evolves in the bottle, developing further layers of flavour and aroma.

"Pristine and pure apricot meal, gentle spices and a highly appealing, almost sensual mineral core; the palate is unctuous on entry, almost thickly textured, but follows through with cleansing, savoury texture, bordering on bitterness but not overstepping the mark; eerily similar to those made in the northern Rhone in France. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. Rating 94" - James Halliday

2009 takes its place in a series of warm vintages for the Canberra District. Impressive fruit concentration and ripe flavours are the hallmarks this year. There is certainly no shortage of flavour: citrus, pear, ginger and apricot aromas lead onto a potent palate with that classic mouth coating Viognier texture. A red drinker's white if ever there was one.

Riedel Vinum Series Montrachet Glass (twin pack) (6416/97)

Vinum Montrachet 6416 97.gif
From its beginnings in northern Bohemia down to this day, for 11 generations and 250 years, Riedel Glass has stood for the high art of glassmaking. So much more than mere receptacles, Riedel decanters and glasses are imbued with the idiosyncrasies of the wine they are charged to accentuate, turning wine consumption into a graceful, prosaic experience.

Introduced in 1986, Vinum was the first machine-made series of glasses in history to be based exclusively on the characteristics of quality, reasonable price and wide distribution.

Vinum has had a permanent impact on the globe's wine glass culture. These glasses have proved to consumers and restaurateurs that the pleasure of consuming wine starts with the glass.

The Vinum collection, developed by Georg Riedel on the principle that the content commands the shape, is the "Vitrum-Vinothek" for every day use.

Vinum is made of over 24% lead crystal.
