Brokenwood Chardonnay 2009 |

Winemakers Comments: Contrary to popular belief the sales of Chardonnay both here in Australia and overseas continues to grow. The ABC club (anything but Chardonnay) must be questioning its numbers. Perhaps it is now the AC/DC club, Always Chard/Decent Chard!! The increased desire of the industry to make better and more interesting Chardonnay has fuelled the sales. This 2009 Brokenwood Chardonnay is made from 44% Beechworth, 33% Cowra and 23% McLaren Vale fruit. The latter part of the Beechworth vintage proved difficult in 2009 but all our Chardonnay was harvested before the heat and fires became too much of a problem. Cowra and McLaren Vale had trouble free vintages with good fruit ripeness and flavours.
Vinification: Oxidative handling resulting in low phenolics and ultimately greater complexity. A combination of pure yeast ferments, with small parcels of wild ferments.
Tasting Notes: Great colour of pale yellow and green tints. The aromas are in the tropical spectrum with background ‘meal’ characters from the yeast lees stirring. White peach flavours initially and soft cashew, vanillin oak feature on the palate. There is a medium alcohol and glycerol weight and a long finish. A great example of Brokenwood’s complex, barrel fermented Chardonnay that will gain weight to give a full flavoured palate. The use of screw cap will ensure consistent aging.
Food: Rich seafoods, pasta and light meat dishes.
