  Pizzini Riesling 2011

Pizzini Rielsing 2006.jpg
Along with the 2007 bushfires, vintage 2011 was one of the most difficult vintages the King Valley has experienced. The constant rain throughout the growing season caused high disease pressures including downy and powdery mildews and botrytis. We knew the King Valley was in for a wet season, so we managed our crop levels to average two tons per acre, this, coupled with the summer’s cooler temperatures allowed the fruit to physically mature earlier. As a result the wines will be lower in alcohol with strong flavours and intensity. Young white wines will be restrained, tight, fresh and zingy. The reds, a little more variable, but in general will have varietal flavours and intense colour. Some reds, depending on the variety, will age gracefully, while others will need to be drunk as young wines.

The Riesling 2011 comes from one of our young hillside vineyard blocks. The grapes were machine harvested at night, then crushed and de-stemmed and pressed lightly, providing delicacy and elegance to the wine. The juice was fermented using a selected yeast to enhance citrus notes and palate structure. It was then cool fermented to retain freshness and varietal character.

The wine has a lovely vibrant straw green colour. The nose initially presents the intense citrus characters of lemon and lime as well as tropical fruit. White plum, floral notes and spice follow. The palate is full and textured with loads of citrus and green apple flavours. The wine has persistence of flavour and refreshing acidity on the palate.
