SILVER MEDAL: 2010 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition, San Diego.
"Has altogether unexpected varietal character, with vibrant peach, ginger and (perhaps) apricot; no excess phenolics and a long finish. 91 Points." - James Halliday.
Colour - Pristine, golden straw.
Nose - Fragrant citrus blossom; classic apricot; almost a lime-like herbaceous characters that lifts all the many aromas of the Lady of the Lake.
Palate - Entry: Fresh and direct full fruit flavours, precise and dashing start. Middle Palate: Rich, serious fruit flavours, ripe cantaloupe, stone fruit, apricot especially and some ginger spice. After Palate: Quite refreshing, citrusy, super juicy fruit flavour, and almost a fennel seed spring to the stone fruit and citrus peel flavours. Finish: A red drinker’s white with a serious little twist of tea like tannin at the end.
Zonte’s Footstep has been on a quest to find and grow the world’s best white varities for more than a decade. Our ‘shining sword rising from the water’ vision wasn’t in mystical Avalon of Arthurian legend but by misty Lake Alexandrina, early one morning in 1997 when Lady of the Lake Viognier was planted.
Zontes’s Footstep is named after 19th century Zante currant vineyard as new plantings follow the original footstep. The currant business dried up, but Zonte’s Footstep became our blueprint…
In 2003 a group of mates pooled old white ‘utes’ and new-ish tractors to grow the best grapes from the best vineyards. All we want to do is taste our fruit in our wine, so we charged our reigning winemaker, Mr. Ben Riggs, with one goal; to make wine true to vineyard so long as it is a bloody good drink!
The Lady of the Lake vineyard is on a 40 million year old alluvial plain, nestled between two rivers adjacent to Lake Alexandrina, upstream from the River Murray’s sea mouth. It is an oasis in a cool desert with vines planted on their own roots, in maritime red sands that sit over pre-Cambrian Limestone and ideal for growing grapes.
