Riedel Grape Series Pinot Noir (twin pack) (6404/7)

Grape Pinot Noir.gif
From its beginnings in northern Bohemia down to this day, for 11 generations and 250 years, Riedel Glass has stood for the high art of glassmaking. So much more than mere receptacles, Riedel decanters and glasses are imbued with the idiosyncrasies of the wine they are charged to accentuate, turning wine consumption into a graceful, prosaic experience.

The Riedel glass designs are based on the exceptional characteristics of each grape variety, which in turn determines the shape, size and rim diameter of the bowl.

The latest machine blown technology, in conjunction with the seamless pulled stem, offers a special design feature, which creates an indent on the bottom of the bowl, reflecting the light and adding another dimension to the lively color of wine.

Pinot Noir in a paragraph (or three): Described by an irony free Vanity Fair connoisseur as “the most romantic of wines, with so voluptuous a perfume, so sweet an edge, and so powerful a punch that, like falling in love, they make the blood run hot and the soul wax embarrassingly poetic,” Pinot Noir has for centuries been a delight for drinkers (Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon: “sex in a glass”) whilst a source of endless frustration for winemakers (André Tchelistcheff: "God made Cabernet Sauvignon whereas the devil made Pinot noir.")

Deriving its name from the French for ‘pine’ and ‘black’, the small, dark, tightly clustered and thin skinned grapes of the Pinot Noir varietal commonly fall prone to bunch rot, whilst the vines themselves suffer downy mildew, leaf roll and fan leaf. No wonder they’ve been described as a “minx of a vine.” It’s a vine that has been around for a long time, however, with historical references as far back as 1st Century AD; it is commonly believed that Pinot Noir, as opposed to most other mutant/cross bred varietals, is no more than two generations removed from wild vines. So ancient is Pinot Noir, that it counts Chardonnay amongst its many offspring. It is The Godfather of Wine Grapes.

When winemakers do manage to get a decent, healthy crop, the results are often spectacular. The Côte d’Or area of Burgundy (the spiritual home of Pinot Noir) produces, inarguably, some of the finest wines on the planet. A bottle of Village or Grand Cru Pinot Noir from this region can be one of the most exquisite 750mls you’ll experience. And one of the most expensive.
