Stanton & Killeen Rutherglen Durif 2007 |

A typical varietal bouquet displaying hints of violets, some cinnamon and cloves, with a mix of crushed dark berries. The full bodied palate shows great appeal with spicy fruit flavours including berries and plums which are rounded out with some clean toasty oak. The wines' balance of fruit, acid and tannin structure suggests it is definitely one worth cellaring.
12 months in new and 2 year old American and French Oak barrels.
The Durif grape variety was developed in the South of France in the late 1890's and is a cross between Shiraz and Peloursin. The variety was planted in Rutherglen in the early 1900's and has gained a reputation for making full bodied dry reds with good bottle ageing potential.
"Durif is the wine in black: black colour, black fruits, black, brooding moodiness. That's not a criticism, by the way. This is the son of shiraz so there's also an explosion of spices and tannin by the bucketload. Stanton & Killeen in Rutherglen applauds the grape's masculinity while also resisting the temptation of launch a full out assault on the senses. Wise move." - Jeni Port, Epicure The Age Tuesday February 2, 2010.
