  Clarendon Hills Romas Grenache 2006

Clarendon Hills Romas Grenache.gif
''96 POINTS. A remarkable wine; the flavour echoes and ricochets around the mouth, building on the back-palate and finish; a wine of extraordinary thrust, but also polish. From 80-year-old vines, made without acid addition, fining or filtration." - James Halliday

Dried herbs, brightly perfumed florals and spiced berry fruits intermingle in this lineated and refined nose. Plenty of background yet to come out. The evolving aroma offers whisps of dried stone fruit, sarsaparilla, kirsch liqueur, Cherry‐Ripe bars, rose petal and mulberry.

Dry spiced and savory fruited palate is supported by complex tannin structure. Acidity and tannin are expressed in this layered and multi‐dimensional example.

Low yielding, dry grown 83 y/o vines are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises bitter tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled onsite without fining or filtration.

18 months, within a hierarchy of 1-5 year old tightly grained French Oak. Barrels are finally hand selected by winemaking team.

The 2006 vintage in Clarendon is best surmised as a Mediterranean finish to what was otherwise a typical Australian summer. The earlier onset of Autumnal coolness slowed ripening towards the end of the harvest season and enhanced colour development and enriched skin thickness ensued. The Romas vineyard is dry grown in tightly compact mineral filled soils. – Quartz, gravel and ironstone. Hand picking took place over several passes to ensure optimal ripeness of the fruit.

This wine forms part of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Grand Cru’ classification.

This wine is the ultimate expression of grenache at Clarendon Hills. It has the structure of Blewitt Springs, as it comes from the steepest part of that site, but is refined in all facets. It is sublime in its delivery of speckled elements – which shoot like a laser-guided boomerang- only to return with another flood of character on the finish. This juxtaposition of fruit, florals and minerals is one for the mantle and something to keep an eye on over 20 years.
