Henschke Johann's Garden Grenache Shiraz 2008 |
| |
|
|
A blend of 60% Grenache, 29% Mourvèdre and 11% Shiraz from low-yielding, old, gnarled, dry-grown bush and trellised vines, Johann’s Garden is named after early Barossa Valley settlers who referred to their vineyards as their gardens.
The 2008 Barossa Valley vintage endured one of the longest heatwaves on record – 15 days over 35 degrees Celsius. It struck a few weeks before the grapes were ready for harvest, resulting in stressed vines, significant leaf drop, escalating sugar levels in the fruit and significant shrivel. Much of the yield was lost, but those parts of the vines which were protected by others, produced incredible fruit resulting in some amazing intensely coloured and flavoured reds, in particular Shiraz.
This vintage of Johann’s Garden is an excellent example of how a disaster can still have some fringe benefits. The alcohol content may be high because of the accelerated sugar content brought on by the heat, but the quality of flavour is unprecedented. A few more years in the bottle will help settle some of the edges, but now or later, this is a wine to savour.
Deep crimson with purple tints. The perfumed nose exhibits aromas of sweet, ripe raspberries, blueberries and plums with the delightful spicy characters of nutmeg, cardamom, star anise, and mace adding complexity. The palate is vibrant, lush and mouthfilling with silky tannins creating a long and lingering finish.
15.5% Alc/Vol.
