Koltz The Etruscan 2009 |
| |
|
|
The 2009 Etruscan is 65% Sangiovese grown by Nat McMurtrie in McLaren Vale, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Langhorne Creek on the old Metala vineyards and 10% Shiraz grown on our own vineyard in Blewitt Springs McLaren Vale.
As with all our wines the Etruscan is fermented in 1 tonne open fermenters and the majority of the wine undergoes extended maceration for up to 35 days. Once ready the grapes are basket pressed and transferred to French oak barrels roughly made up of 30% new oak and equal proportions of 2nd and 3rd use barrels.
10% 0f the blend is made using a Tuscan technique called ‘governo all’uso’ which helps in the wines structure and complexity.
The nose of The Etruscan is dominated by Sangiovese with red fruits being prominent. It is a dry, savoury wine with pronounced fine tannins and good length. It is made for drinking with food.
You won't see this around or amplified through the wine writers guild as Mark sells out his wines mainly in exports and direct sales to the small coterie of the wise Australian drinking public who know, understand and revel in a wine man doing his stuff! Buy it, drink it, Love it!
Koltz began as a small wine label in 1995 when winemaker Mark Day and Anna Koltunow made their first wine using grapes from the Bottin Vineyard in McLaren Vale. Since that time Koltz has evolved and now specialises in shiraz and shiraz blends from the McLaren Vale region, renowned for its shiraz wines worldwide. Mark Day has worked as a wine maker for Maxwell Wines and Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale and as a consultant in Italy and France over the last 6 European vintages.
Koltz is a very small producer and all are wines are hand crafted using traditional methods in that they are fermented in open vats and when dry, basket pressed and put to oak. We try to make wines that are individual and reflect our philosophy that wines should be complex but a pleasure to drink at any stage of their evolution.
We are located on a scenic vineyard in the Blewitt Springs region of McLaren Vale and are now in the process of building a small boutique winery. Our estate wines will reflect another phase of Koltz evolution, combining individual attention and European experience with Australian style based on shiraz from our vineyard.
