VERY LIMITED STOCKS
The 2006/7 growing season was one of the driest on record in the Hunter Valley, with rainfall of a little over half the annual average. Whilst drought conditions can help concentrate flavour intensity into small yields, it also presents further complications in production, with over-ripe fruit potentially delivering an eager wine that runs its course too soon.
Brokenwood have been enduring these growing conditions for over a decade now, and as such have developed finesse skills in dealing with them. Applied to champion wines such as the legendary Graveyard Shiraz, the results are intriguing wines of a complexity not found during more fertile periods.
Excellent deep colour and youthful tints, with strong lifted aroma’s of sweet earth and dark cherry. The oak (nearly all French) is obvious in this as a young wine but will soften and integrate. Initial flavours of dark chocolate and ripe plums; these are supported by beautifully ripe tannins giving a slight cedar edge. There is mocha/vanillin from the oak but this is in balance with the fruit characters. Perhaps a ‘solid’ Graveyard Shiraz as opposed to a ‘big’ wine but a skilfully made Hunter from a hot, dry year.
