91/100 James Hallidays Australian Wine Companion 2009 ―Has well above average weight and depth for Margaret River Shiraz, with ripe berry fruits offset by fine but ripe tannins; good oak use. Screw cap. Cellar to 2017. (4.5 glass rating)
91/100 Ray Jordan—The West Australian, March 2009 - The Clairault shiraz from Margaret River shows what this region can do with this variety in good years… A very good example of Margaret River Shiraz. Sourced from a single vineyar near Cowaramup. It’s ripe and quite full with spicy nutmeg and vanilla bean subtly infused. Soft generous palate with rip tannins.
Deep red in colour. Classic fruit cake aromas, raisins, currants, prunes, nutmeg, cinnamon, with a touch of vanilla oak. An attractive aroma that show good fruit complexity. The palate is medium bodied with a sweet core of vibrant red berry fruit flavour. Fine powdery tannins provide a balanced structure through to a clean finish.
Fruit for this wine was sourced from a single vineyard near the township of Cowaramup. 2005 is considered an excellent year for shiraz in the region due to the fine and mild conditions during much of the ripening followed by a spell of warm weather right at the finish giving a lift in the intensity of the wines while maintaining the varietal integrity. Fairly traditional winemaking ensued with open fermentation for 7 – 10 days followed by 18 months maturation in new and used French oak barriques.
