Made from near century old vines planted in 500 million year old soil (apparently), the Mt Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz is one of Australia’s original and best examples of the varietal. The 2008 vintage has been much discussed due to the heat for extended periods producing mixed results for many vineyards. Many wines from that period however have shown great resilience and winemaking skill to produce wines of tremendous depth and flavour and this is no exception.
Very deep crimson/black in colour. A complex sweet, spicy nose showing lifted fragrant aromas of plum and blackberry with hints of sage and pepper supported by toasty French and some American oak. The intensely fruited palate exhibiting dark berries is complex and fleshy with great structure, velvety tannins and a long finish.
Definitely one for the cellar - although coincidently drinks really smartly now.
