Cabernet is Coonawarra’s pre-eminent variety, but silky, herbal Shiraz from the region’s rich red soils is fast making a name for itself. For industry icon Peter Rymill, crafting ‘big reds’ is in his blood... He and his family “are descendants of John Riddoch and have long owned some of the finest Coonawarra soil” (Halliday). Making the most of gnarled old vines, French winemaker Sandrine Gimo employed every inch of her 20 plus years of winemaking knowhow to craft a wine 100% estate grown and made. The results are spellbinding. “This is a very good shiraz. The bouquet and palate bring spice, pepper and oak to the party; it is medium-bodied, with black cherry and blackberry fruits and fine-grained tannins … 95 points”
Awards and Accolades
95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "This is a very good Coonawarra shiraz, speaking volumes about its variety and place, and little about its vinification, the last very sensible. The colour is bright crimson-purple through to the rim, the bouquet and palate bringing spice, pepper and French oak to the party; it is medium-bodied, its black cherry and blackberry fruits with fine-grained tannins and a reprise of the oak."
2012 Vintage: 91 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front "Rymill Coonawarra Shiraz is almost always a handy wine but looking down the list of prior reviews/vintages, it almost never seems to hit the heights. This release follows that trend. It’s fragrant, spicy, shot with cherry-plum medium-weight fruit flavour and kissed by creamy oak. It does the job admirably, finishes with fine/grainy/coffeed tannin, and is pleasingly fruit-and-spice driven through the finish."
