Cape Mentelle Zinfandel 2009 |
| |
|
|
APPEARANCE: Dark red and crimson.
NOSE: Prunes, blackcurrant, aniseed, dark chocolate and roasted coffee.
PALATE: Inky, rich and full bodied with ripe black fruits complemented by delicate cinnamon spice and a savoury structure. The fruit intensity is balanced by a subtle use of oak leading to great length and a lovely clarity of fruit.
VINEYARD: Cape Mentelle’s Zinfandel was planted in 1974 on a ridge of free draining lateritic gravel on an east west row orientation to minimise the affects of strong westerly sea breezes. Traditionally planted to low density bush vines this vineyard requires fastideous attention to detail to ensure only the best quality fruit is produced.
THE SEASON: A cool, wet and windy spring extended into the flowering period around November, setting up the season for low yields for all varieties. The sun came out on cue in December and perfect ripening conditions continued through harvest, interrupted only by a spot of rain at the start of March - enough to give the vines a drink and see all varieties harvested in optimal condition.
WINEMAKING: The zinfandel was handpicked in the first week of March. After destemming, the must was allowed to soak for several days prior to fermentation to soften up the raisins. The wine steadily fermented to dryness prior to basket pressing directy to large oak vats and barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation. We used 25% new French oak barrels for a total of 18 months. The wine was bottled in November 2010.
