The wine is gold green in colour and exhibits a complex bouquet of grapefruit and melon with hints of well integrated subtle nutty oak aromas. The palate is textured and offers an attractive mouth feel with great structure, richness and balance. It is beautifully balanced with a long, lingering finish. Enjoy as a young wine and over the next 3 -5 years with careful cellaring.
Winemakers Notes The grapes for this wine were picked from our 40 year old vines grown in the volcanic soil of the ancient Fordwich Sill. These low yielding mature vines produce ripe, concentrated fruit which results in a wine with excellent regional and varietal characters. To achieve subtle oak integration, this wine was partially matured in new French barriques for 6 months for added complexity and richness.
The Timbervines vineyard was planted in 1970 by Lindemans and was purchased by us in 2002 . The fruit was all picked at optimum ripeness and fermented in 2 separate batches. Each component was selected for the final blend as a result of its individual structure and its fruit characters. One batch was fermented in new French oak and left on its own lees for two months. This portion was given a further four months in barrel. The second portion was fermented with a significant proportion of solids in two year old oak. The wine was blended using the various proportions of the individual parcels to provide a wine with a multi-layered palate of intense primary fruit characters enhanced by the soft French oak characters. Minimal filtration was used on the wine prior to bottling. -Andrew Margan, Winemaker
