Forrest Valleys Gewurtztraminer 2008 |

Gewurztraminer is grown on two distinctly different vineyard sites within Marlborough’s Wairau River Valley. The first, our home vineyard, is in the middle of classic Wairau River gravels. Stony, free-draining, warm, devigorating soils, which are ideal for the production of small berries packed with exotic, spicy flavours –ginger, lychee, rambutan and nashi pear. The second site is in the southern Brancott Valley, on much older soils of crushed rock mixed with a portion of clay. Here the aromas are more perfumed, reminding me of “Organza” by Givenchy, rose scented and seductive. The grapes where harvested in the cool of the evening, gently processed and given six hours skin contact prior to pressing, cold settling, cool fermentation, blending, and finishing for bottling in late August.
Star anise, freshly-grated root ginger and lychees on the nose while the palate shows molten Turkish Delight, exotic spices and a rich luscious texture. This wine has a lovely ripe sweetness but matched with an elegant acidity. Ideal with Asian-inspired foods.
