Yealands Way Riesling 2010 |
| |
|
|
The 2010 Yealands Way Riesling has flavours and aromas of lemon, lime, and honeysuckle, that will develop and intensify over time. The style is off dry with a small amount of residual sugar that is balanced with crisp, fresh acidity.
We harvested a wide range of flavours off two riesling blocks within the Seaview Vineyard, ranging from the distinctive lemon and lime citrus flavours to more floral and honeysuckle flavours. The Seaview vineyard is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall which produces a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavours. The rolling contours of the vineyard result in significant variation (smaller, more intensely flavoured fruit on the ridges, balanced by lush growth in the gullies).
We machine harvested the riesling blocks when the flavours peaked and then balanced the high acidity. The fruit was must chilled and gently pressed then after a light racking was inoculated with a specific yeast to enhance the citrus flavours distinctive of riesling. A long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed to retain optimal flavour, then the wine was finished with a light fining and filtration prior to bottling.
At the heart of Yealands Estate is the determined spirit and unconventional thinking of founder and principal Peter Yealands. Happiest with his sleeves rolled up, out working the land, Peter turned the steeply sloped hills (many said were just too rugged for viticulture) into some of the first terraced vineyard in the country. That same ‘can do’ attitude drove the construction of a world class winery linking excellence in environmental design with state of the art technology and underpins our ambition to become a world leader in sustainable wine production.
