Clear and pale yellow in colour with a hint of green, the aroma reveals intensely varietal qualities of tropical fruits – including fresh, rich notes of passionfruit, pineapple and papaya. The palate fills the mouth with a lively, zesty combination of flavours. This delightfully refreshing wine is best when served cool.
Our vineyards occupy the rolling plateaux at the heights of the Strathbogie Ranges. The mountain soils are sandy clay loams overlying orange clays of varying depths to 1.5 metres. In the coolness of spring the vines produce only small berries, while in summer the low rainfall and intense sunshine nurture fruit that is dense in both colour and flavour. The position of the vineyards on the heights of the hills ensures that damaging frosts are rare – an almost constant breeze over the ranges and through the vineyards keeps the subzero air from settling in.
In terms of the characteristics of the wines produced by the region, the Strathbogies are in many ways the sum of the surrounding wine regions. Like the Heathcote and Goulburn Valley regions to the west, they produce magnificent Shiraz, but with a note of cool climate refinement. The quality of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other white varietals are clearly in the league of the Upper Goulburn Valley and the Yarra Valley to the south of the ranges. Like the King Valley and Alpine Valley wine regions to the north-east, the Strathbogies are capable of producing superb cool-climate expressions of Italian varietals.
The vineyards of Plunkett Fowles are home to an array of varieties. The families own vineyards totalling over 500 acres. These holdings include mature plantings of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Verdelho, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. We also have some small plantings of Albarino, Arnies, Vermintino Sangiovese and Lagrein.
