Silver – New Zealand International Wine Show 2010 Yealands Estate Reserve is only produced in exceptional years. Meticulously crafted from small parcels of fruit that showcase the purest expression of our Seaview Vineyard, the wines are a tribute to our winemaker’s skill; each reflecting a deft balance of texture, flavour and true varietal intensity. Aromas of dried thyme, honey and sweet pea are underpinned by hints of nut, savoury notes and a long mineral finish. An ideal match with spicy dishes. Yealands Estate Reserve Sauvignon Blanc was selected from a block close to the sea, which displayed the intense Seaview characteristics of crushed fresh thyme, wet stone, minerality and strong texture. We enabled the block to get extra ripe (24.0 Brix) before we harvested. Harvesting was done by hand to ensure that only the very best bunches were picked for this wine. After harvesting the parcels were whole bunched pressed, with a portion (35%) transferred directly into a mix of new (40%) and second year (60%) French oak barriques and puncheons. This portion underwent natural fermentation followed by malolactic fermentation and was kept in oak on lees, and stirred weekly. To create a different style Sauvignon Blanc with plenty of mid palate weight, texture and body the juice remained in oak for up to 12 months. The balance underwent fermentation in stainless steel tanks with cultivated yeasts and was also kept on lees with weekly stirring for an extended period. This portion gives the wine texture but more importantly finesse, elegance, balance and good mineral length.
