I have a huge load of mates that simply adore this wine maker and this wine in particular, describing it as powerful, understated and immensley drinkable all day long and who am I to disagree? Winemaker Notes: Deep purple/red in colour. The aroma is deep and complex with ripe raspberry, blackberry, anise, spice, dark chocolate and vanillan, with subtle hints of mint and earth. The palate is multi-layered with silky texture, intense, sweet ripe fruit flavours that are supported by an excellent structure and full, long supple savoury tannins. Approachable now, this wine has long term (20+ years) cellaring potential. This 100% single estate wine was sourced from 20 individual plantings from the Metala Vineyards, Langhorne Creek. It was matured for 16 months in 50% new American and French oak, with the remaining in 1 & 2 year old French and American oak. If you hadn’t already worked it out, Brothers in Arms is very much a family concern. As the owners, Guy & Liz Adams are involved in all aspects of the business on a daily basis. It’s not surprising really as they live on the vineyard only 2 minutes down the road to the winery. The homestead is the hub of everything as well as being the domain of their 2 young children, Myles & Emily. They are the 6th Generation to live at Metala and are the inspiration for many things, including the No 6 label. That said, it is also the employees of both the Metala Vineyards and the Brothers in Arms Winery who are integral to the success of the businesses and their loyalty and hard work is valued immensely. We have over the years worked to become a fully integrated group of businesses. The family has been growing grapes since 1891 and wine was made originally in cellars on the estate up until 1952 when production was moved to Stonyfell. Back in the 1980’s Guy began mucking around with small parcels of fruit with his father Stu, just as a hobby of course. Doing this only confirmed what they already knew; that they could make really high quality wines themselves. So, with the support of his mother Helen, Brothers in Arms turned into a really expensive hobby in 1998 when 500 cases of shiraz from the vineyards were produced around at Lake Breeze under the watchful eye of Greg Follett, one of the regions most highly regarded winemakers. From there, as they say, it’s history. A state of the art winery was built just in time for production of the 2002 vintage as the business was becoming too big to use outside wineries, Having control of the wines from the soil to the bottle gives us great satisfaction. We understand how each parcel of fruit came to be and where certain distinct characteristics may be found. This is invaluable when it comes to blending the wines, building each layer of texture and flavour to create styles which we believe best showcase our estate and the Langhorne Creek region.
