Riedel Grape Series Montrachet Glass (twin pack) (6404/97) |

|
From its beginnings in northern Bohemia down to this day, for 11 generations and 250 years, Riedel Glass has stood for the high art of glassmaking. So much more than mere receptacles, Riedel decanters and glasses are imbued with the idiosyncrasies of the wine they are charged to accentuate, turning wine consumption into a graceful, prosaic experience.
The Riedel glass designs are based on the exceptional characteristics of each grape variety, which in turn determines the shape, size and rim diameter of the bowl.
The latest machine blown technology, in conjunction with the seamless pulled stem, offers a special design feature, which creates an indent on the bottom of the bowl, reflecting the light and adding another dimension to the lively color of wine.
Montrachet in a paragraph (or three): Located in the southern half of the famous Cote d'Or region of Burgundy, Montrachet is considered the finest Chardonnay producing vineyard in the world. Deemed a Grand Cru Vineyard (the highest level of classification of AOC wines from Burgundy or Alsace) for its exceptional quality, the Montrachet vineyard is divided between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet and is owned by 18 separate consortiums, some of them investment banks.
The region is so synonymous with quality Chardonnay (though the French adhere to the tradition of labelling their wines by place of origin, as opposed to varietal) that four neighbouring vineyards have also earned the Grand Cru badge. None, however, have quite the reputation that Montrachet has. Nor the price tag.
In 1993 the Crédit Foncier bank purchased a 428m2 sub division (a little over 0.5% of the total vineyard area) for more than half a million Euros. That equates to 252 bottles (21 cases) of wine per vintage for their investment, and that’s in a good year. No wonder prices for a bottle range from 55 Euros ($89AUD) to 1800 Euros ($2920AUD).
