The release of this Bordeaux Blend -'Meritage' from the fabulous 2006 vintage is a stunner! A very bold dark brick red colour with purple hues, the nose has delightful lifted blackberry and cassis. Just like a prime Frenchman's berrie wearing, soft cheese loving Bordeaux, since it's made with the same mix of classic grapes selection! There's an inviting rich, full aroma to it on opening. It is all blackberry, black cherry, spices, chocolate, and vanilla. Most Meritages have the Bordeaux signature flavors - cigar box, rich fruits, with a hefty feel. It has to be a "high-end" wine for the winery - & it has to be a blend of certain grapes. These are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot. Just Yum!
The palate offers sweet fruit flavours with luscious plums and black current with an extra portion of mint distinctively Petit Verdot. Good texture and colour followed with a long persistent finish. This special release vineyard series has captured the interest of many over the last few years. The grapes are processed at McLaren Vintners. Geoff Hardy is in charge of the wine production and the results are definitely of a high standard. Geoff Hardy is a member of the fifth generation of the Hardy winemaking family. After studying at Roseworthy College, he set out on a career path as an independent grape grower and viticulturist and bought his first vineyard, Pertaringa, along with Ian Leask in 1980. Today he oversees a small empire. Home is on the 35 hectare Kuitpo Vineyard, where he produces premium, cooler-climate, dry styles of wines. There are the original McLaren Vale Vineyards (31 hectares), the 160 hectare Wirrega Vineyard near Bordertown (which he bought in with six partners in 1993), and the most recent addition, the Angas Vineyard Joint Venture at Langhorne Creek. It is not only his flair for viticulture that has made him successful, but his ability to initiate and manage a range of ventures simultaneously.
