What can I say? A personal favourite indeed; for brilliant dinner guests, quiet moments of reflection, thinking time with Vivaldi... This is just a given purchase for your cellar! Buy a bottle or buy a truck load at this price and save a bundle on Coonawarra's premium Cabernet Sauvignon. Odyssey is listed alongside the nation's finest wines in the "Outstanding" category in the prestigious Langton's Classification IV 2005. The Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon also boasts a place in this Classification under the "Distinguished" category.
At the very pinnacle of the wines that Wayne Stephens produces at Katnook Estate stands the Odyssey. This wine has an amazing pedigree having won numerus medals internationally. It’s made from select parcels of outstanding Cabernet fruit then consigned to spend up to 40 months in a combination of French and American oak. Ripe mulberry and plum fruit with subtle mocha and vanillin oak, before a multi layered palate that is generously berried and vivid with plum and spice. This is a wine of nobility with immense structure before fine-grained tannins and a lingering finish.
This multi-award winning wine has a string of international trophies to its name including Best Australian Red and the Frescobaldi Trophy for Best Vintage Red Wine, awarded twice, at the 2003 UK International Wine & Spirit Competition for the 1998 Odyssey.
Odyssey also boasts gold medals for both the 2000 and 2001 vintages in the Decanter World Wine Awards for 2005 and 2006.
Past Accolades and Awards:
Ray Jordan: 96 Highly concentrated and powerful interpretation of Coonawarra Cabernet, A two-stage oak maturation process, where the wine is racked to additional new oak, increased the new oak influence. This has been matured for almost three years in French and American oak. The intense fruit, with its precise lines, provides a wine of great length and focus. It will cellar for many years.
James Halliday: 95 Has been accorded the full Odyssey treatment, matured for 34 months in a mixture of French and American barriques, 70 per cent new; a full-bodied wine, with abundant blackcurrant and mulberry fruit, and tannins that have not been silenced by the protracted barrel ageing.
Campbell Mattinson: 93 Odyssey cabernet sauvignon is typically at the bigger end of the Coonawarra cabernet style spectrum. This 2008 release is the perfect case in point. It could easily pass as a beefy shiraz. It tastes of blackcurrant and beef stock, smoky-sawdusty oak and cloves. Warm, spicy, brandied finish. Integrated tannin. I wouldn’t doubt its cellaring potential.
Jeremy Oliver: 91 Deeply ripened, this very firm, profoundly oaked and structured cabernet has a densely packed bouquet of cassis, dark plums and cherries knit handsomely knit with chocolate/cedar/coconut oak and backed by suggestions of currants and dried herbs It's long and astringent, dark-fruited and mineral, with a slightly baked, currant-like expression of fruit and oak framed by drying, powdery tannins. It needs time.
From the Winery
2009 Coonawarra vintage was noted for the brief period of near record high temperatures in late February. The following cooler mild conditions were ideal for producing ripe Cabernet Sauvignon fruit at near optimal flavours. Odyssey is created from small parcels of premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from some of our oldest vineyards and selected for their richness and intense Cabernet Sauvignon flavours.
The variable conditions produced higher than expected maturity levels, concentrated colour and tannins and generous flavours. These attributes in the wines have since grown in stature and gained high praise. This Cabernet Sauvignon features brilliant colour, abundant fruit and substantial palate structure expected of the vintage. A wine with excellent cellaring potential.
Oak Maturation: First maturation of 15 months in 225L Barriques – 60% of the barrels were new, 45% New French and 15% American. Second Maturation of 19 months in 225L Barriques – 77% of barrels were new, 56% French and 21% American.
