  Kooyong Massale Pinot Noir 2014

Kooyong Massale Pinot Noir.gif

The entry level option for powerhouse producer, Kooyong, is made to be approachable and easy to drink - something it achieves oh so well!

A deep cherry-ruby colour. An aromatic nose which speaks of pretty red and dark-red berry fruits, raspberry, black cherry and bramble. Violetty purple floral characteristics sit comfortably with savoury cardamom and herbal notes. The palate is fresh, pure and restrained, with a powerful core of vibrant red fruits. Balanced acidity and light spicy tannins make for an interesting and somewhat addictive finish.

Awards and Accolades

95 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Australian Wine Companion
"A prototype of the modern drinking red. Complex, charming, mid-weight without being lacking, fragrant, lengthy. Sweet fruit meets smoky reduction meets wood meets savoury herbs. Shine a light into any of its nooks and you'll find something fascinating. Don't hesitate, drink it now."

2013 Vintage: 94 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
"Strong, deep colour; the complex bouquet has a rainbow of aromas ranging from plum through to warm spices and charcuterie, the palate adding outright savoury/foresty nuances to a pinot with attitude."

2012 Vintage: 92 Points - Huon Hooke
"Attractive, medium to full red/purple colour. Lightly meaty charcuterie-like aromas with a degree of complexity, turning to sweet cherry conserve as it breathed. Soft, powdery tannins run the length of the palate. Medium-bodied and smooth, with flesh and richness and a very appealing array of flavours. Some firmness in the tannins. Far from a tutti-frutti style, this has gravitas and cherry liqueur-like characters."

From the Winery

The 2014 Kooyong Massale is an estate blend of Pinot Noir parcels from the Kooyong and Ballewindi vineyards. The parcels in this wine represent 14.05 hectares.

It is fermented, without yeast inoculation, in open vats for 19 to 21 days, with a small percentage of whole bunches included. The malolactic conversion is also indigenous. A maturation period of 10 months in French oak barriques, 15% new, is followed by 4 months in large format foudres.

The 2013-2014 growing season started with a warm winter followed by strong early season growth and an early spring with above average temperatures. An extended cold and wet period in October and November lead to a prolonged flowering period with reduced fruit set, resulting in below average yields.

This cold period continued throughout December, finally broken by a warm summer with several heat waves during the month of January. A warm February and the lower yields brought an earlier than usual start to harvest.

Mild March weather and the lower yields made for a short and steady harvest for both our viticultural and winery teams. While yields were low, the quality of the fruit was very high producing wines that impress with depth, length and linear direction.
