Castello Banfi Toscana Chianti Classico DOCG 2013

What’s more Italian than Chianti? Though this isn’t the kind that comes in basket encased bottles – this is something far better, a true example of what Chianti is. Traditionally a blend of Cab Sav and Sangiovese this offering from Banfi displays an aroma of ripe red cherries, plums, and raspberries with a slight whiff of savoury leather (I also distinctly smelt a hint of cured meat). The flavour is medium to big bodied, dry with more fruit flavours layered over a moreish earthiness. Fine tannins and a well-balanced acidity give it a nice texture and finish, with a slight herbal flavour at the last second. Seriously brillanté!

From the Winery

Celebrating the best Tuscan tradition Banfi offers a family of Chianti wines varied and complementary, unique in its style. Banfi Chianti Classico perfectly interprets the unique personality of this historic appellation with its alluring bouquet, rich flavours, supple tannins and good acidity.

85-90% Sangiovese, with a selection of traditional Chianti Classico varietals. Produced in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
Length of Barrel Aging: 3 Months.
Temperature: 25-30 degrees centigrade.
Length: 7 days.
Malolactic: Yes, within the next two months.
Origin of Barrel: Mainly in Slavonian Oak Casks and a smaller proportion in French Oak Barrels.

The start of the growing season was slightly delayed, with abundant spring rainfall and temperatures in May and June well below the seasonal average. The weather was warm and dry from mid-June through August, when temperatures dropped again. Cool nights encouraged the development of aromatics and the synthesis of polyphenols in the grapes, enhancing the overall quality of the bouquet and the wine’s acidity. Scarce rainfall allowed for ideal harvest conditions.
