Maretti Langhe Rosso Barbera Nebbiolo 2013

Maretti Langhe Rosso Barbera Nebbiolo.gif

Just opened a bottle of this and what a smack in the eye from an opulent and immediately engaging wine. From the big region that can produce monsters and delicate waifs of wine this is an outstanding wine normally destined for restaurants and probably around $65 a bottle + The blend is a screaming endorsement of they producer to make premium wine and at a snap of a price from an excellent vintage.

Dark brick red in colour with crimson highlights. The nose is fruit-driven and vibrant with aromas of fresh red fruits, dried herbs and a smudge of aniseed. The palate is rich and full - medium to full bodied, driven by core of supple raspberry and dark plum flavours courtesy of the Barbera. Nebbiolo adds structure and length alongside fine tannins. The vineyards of Piemonte (Piedmont in English) are planted in the foothills of the Alps in the north west of Italy. The region is home to the finest full- bodied red wines in Italy. The greatest wines of the region are made from the extremely long lived Nebbiolo, from the iconic appellations of Barolo and Barbaresco. However the lively and fruit driven Barbera grape offers excellent drinking pleasure at a much younger age.

The Maretti Langhe Rosso weaves rich and opulent Barbera (70%) with the haunting aromas and structure of Nebbiolo (30%) to create an inviting and rewarding wine with layers of complexity – one that is truly expressive of this unique wine region

Past Accolades and Awards:

"This took a good long while to unfurl in the glass. It really needs a couple of years at least to show itself properly. It tastes of peanut shells, dark cherries, leather, anise, chinotto, various dried herbs. It’s juicy and well balanced but stern and tannic through the finish. I wasn’t sure at first; when I came back a couple of hours later, I was certain. This is fabulous value. And, given some time, will be terrific drinking." - 91+ pts Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front

"A blend of 70% Barbera and 30% Nebbiolo, imported by Fourth Wave Wine. It’s leathery, slightly gamey, savoury and entirely worth your while. Red cherries, fennel seeds and sage with plums laying down the bass line. Has a little rose petal mouth perfume. Bright acid and assertive tannin but not at all foreboding as a youngster. A tough import to compete with at the price." - 91 points Jeremy Pringle - Wine Will Eat Itsself

"70% Barbera and 30% Nebbiolo indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 8 months in small French oak and large Slavonian oak, blended and given a further 4 months in large oak casks. Very full, near impenetrable black-red colour. This has an aromatic bouquet with volume and intensity of savoury black berry fruits, black ink, revealing lifted black florals intermixed with tar and funky game complexities. Medium-full bodied, fulsome and up-front flavours of black fruits, tar, ink and game show with ripe lusciousness. The fruit is supported by fine-grained supple, tannin textures and balanced acidity providing good tension and freshness. The funky game elements grow to form a complex melange of sweet and savoury flavours that carry through to a lingering finish. This is a fulsome, funky and gamy Barbera and Nebbilo blend with juiciness and good structure. Match with red game meat dishes over the next 5+ years." - 17.5-/20. Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
