A brilliant, pale straw green colour. This is a classically restrained, style of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. They have deliberately avoided excessive greenness preferring to show a range of Sauvignon aromas. The nose is clean with precise lime, grapefruit, citrus and some stonefruit characters lifting the ripe gooseberry and tropical fruit notes typical of the region and variety.
Awards and Accolades
☆☆☆☆ - Raymond Chan "The acidity is poised and refreshing, with a long subtle stone fruit and herb fruited finish. This is a very fine, firm, subtle oak-influenced Sauvignon Blanc"
From the Winery
Domain Road has two vineyards in the heart of the historic gold mining area of Bannockburn. Domain Road Vineyard covers most of the north-facing valley on the upper terraces above the Kawarau River with Defiance Vineyard on a gently sloping, north facing site on Felton Road. i
Our Sauvignon Blanc vines are planted in three locations, on the top of Templers Hill, an area left untouched by 19th century gold miners, on Doctors Flat where mining has exposed mineral-rich clays from a 8-15 million year old lake bed and on a corner of Defiance with clay based soils.
The grapes were hand harvested in two portions on 24th and 31st March 2015. The fruit from Defiance Vineyard (Felton Road) was whole bunch pressed and transferred to seven French oak barriques to undergo barrel fermentation and lees maturation for three months. The fruit from Domain Road was de-stemmed and crushed before being pressed to tank for fermentation. Some residual sweetness from the grapes was retained to produce a well balanced wine.
