Elegant stuff here from the Elefante crew at Castilla La Mancha, a crisp white made for those Spanish summer days - and equally enjoyable on one of our own scorchers!
Fresh and lifted aromatics range from citrus and stone fruits, to more exotic notes of white peach, passionfruit and guava. Expressive and lively on the palate, more floral notes intertwine nicely with a core of passionfruit and white peach. Balanced nicely with good mineral acidity, the finish is crisp and zingy. Recommended well chilled, this is a great accompaniment to a number of seafood and white meat dishes.
From the Winery
The vast, high and dry plains of Castilla la Mancha comprise over 50% of Spain’s vineyards. The ancient soils and high altitude ensures the richly flavoured fruit maintains structure and tannin. Vineyards planted on the slopes of mountain ranges in the north and north east adds elegance to the wines.
Despite the fireworks elsewhere, 2014 was a relatively trouble free vintage in La Mancha with regular but not excessive rain events and sufficient sunlight hours during ripening. As is so often the case in cooler vintages in warmer climates, the white wines of 2014 are of outstanding quality with beautiful aromatics and acidity.
A core of Macabeo provides rich depth of flavour balanced by the cooler climate Viura sourced from Rioja. Verdejo adds fresh aromatics and minerality. A fast and precise vinification with fruit hand harvested in the early morning is followed by fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel preventing malolactic fermentation. Aged on lees for three months in tank.
