Just about the most consistent wine in Australia and now becoming a true icon of the region. Don't miss out on your chance to own a remarkable wine from a remarkable producer. Yet again the latest Cape Mentelle has stepped in and challenged the vintage that came before it. Each year it seems critics hail the current vintage the best yet, and this is no exception.
Dark, vibrant ruby red. A complex and balanced mix of redcurrants, boysenberry, coffee and rolled tobacco with a touch of violets and lavender. Inky and complex fruit with great poise and intensity combining dark berries, couverture and wet slate with velvety tannins leading to a long, cool and mineral finish. This one's a keeper! Drink it now and you will be a happy camper, hold onto it and open it up in 15 years and you will be one VERY happy camper!
Accolades and Awards:
95 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Australian Wine Companion "A seamless parade of varietal and regional flavour. Gone is the brawn of yesteryear; this holds finesse and length closest to its chest. Blackcurrant, cedar wood, dust, undergrowth and gravel/eucalypt characters build a wealth of succulent momentum before lingering on through the finish. Integration of tannin the final quality flourish."

2012 Vintage: JAMES HALLIDAY’S TOP 100, THE WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN MAGAZINE: 98 A glorious cabernet, its blackcurrant, cedar and spice bouquet leading into a seamless, perfectly balanced palate with cassis and redcurrant fruit framed by cedary oak. It is the amazing tannins, softly woven into the fabric of the fruit, that give this wine its unique class.
2012 Vintage: GARY WALSH, THE WINE FRONT: 95 It’s probably my favourite Australian wine region – physically and for the wines it produces. … Nutty oak in support, dark fruit, chocolate, leaf and floral perfume. Medium bodied, but pretty dense this vintage – feels a little more serious – turning up the heft and ripeness just a little. It’s kind of glossy yet laden with tannin, mineral and grunt. Has length and impact, while maintain its typical well mannered charm. Feels very much like a long term release.
2012 Vintage: TYSON STELZER: 95 Crunchy and tangy, this wine is defined by notes of capsicum, sage and tomato leaf around a core of dark fruits and a firm cage of enduring tannins.
2011 Vintage: RAY JORDAN: 98 The Cape Mentelle cabernets just get better each year. This one is right in there with the best of them. The 2010 was outstanding, but this brings a greater depth and fruit concentration into the palate while retaining that beautifully elegant design which has become a feature of these wines. Dusty powdery tannins, medium-weight concentrated fruit and such beautiful oak treatment. Takes cabernet to an art form.
2011 Vintage: Tyson Stelzer: 97 For the warmest vintage in a decade in Margaret River, it retains impeccably vibrancy and unwavering poise amidst considerable power and solid, generous concentration. Firm, fine tannins propel an enduring finish, promising great longevity. [...] It works, defining delightful violet fragrance over a core of blackcurrant fruit and coffee bean oak.
