Despite having been making this wine since the start of the 20th Century, Miguel A. Torres first planted the French Cabernet Sauvignon variety at the Pacs de Penedes winery in the late Sixties, a decision that has continued to yield wine of both superb quality and craftsmanship, and make Grans Coronas the benchmark for ‘Reserva’ Red Wines. The combination of Cab Sav and Temprenillo (arguably the ‘nobility’ of the European varietals) are both evident in this, from the gorgeous ochre and brick red colouring through to the nose and palate – from the eye to the mouth you might say. The aroma is richly sensual and typical of the grapes bringing to mind small and flavourful red and black cherries, green coffee beans, liquorice and hints of leather and vanilla courtesy of the ageing process. The flavours are well-rounded and full, with silky and well built tannins. This is a beautiful marriage of two different personalities, it’s a case of (to quote a well known 90’s girl group) When 2 Become 1.
ABOUT THE WINERY: Founded in 1870, Torres continues to be the largest Spanish premium bottled wine supplier to international wine markets. Dedicated to fine wine, the Torres family initiated the first meeting of the Primum Familae Vini, which includes famous wine houses such as Antinori, Mondavi, Hugel, Muller and Rothschild, to name just a few.
This wine was first made more than 100 years ago, combining the varietals of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvigon. Today its quality is recognised in more than 120 countries across the world.
