  Vasse Felix Heytesbury Red 2011

Vasse Felix Heytesbury Cabernet Sauvignon.gif

Only the best will do for this elegant, juicy, complex cab sav. Choc-coated blackcurrants is the first smell out of the glass, closely followed by whiffs of leafiness, savoury meatiness, cedar and licorice spice. The palate is edging towards full-bodied, with dark berry flavours, a hint of mint, generous licks of chocolate and vanilla, firm tannins, and a long, elegant finish. It's built for the long haul, but would go well with some roast lamb and mint sauce.

Another name has ascended to join the grand marques of Margaret River. The greatest Heytesbury to date has a thirty year future ahead. With molecular precision, gripping control, chiselled angles and coiled-up tension, it's a blanket of blackcurrant over a graphite tannin wall.

Flagship Vasse Felix blend of cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec. Once upon a time the word flagship almost always = heavy-handed oak but nowadays Heytesbury Cabernet is a more balanced affair. This release is much like the 2011 ‘standard’ Vasse Felix cabernet with a little extra fruit-and-tannin grunt. There’s more than a passing resemblance between the two. Medium-weight boysenberry, mulberry and blackcurrant flavours with leather, bay leaf and tobacco notes making for a complex impression. Everything’s lined up and in order; time is all that is now required. As a wine it doesn’t come at you; you have to slow down and meet it in the middle somewhere.

A powerhouse of concentration, wrapped seamlessly together with layers of cassis, red fruits, cedar, crushed leaf and violets; the palate is expansive yet precise, with an impressively long and persistent thread of elegant tannins and balanced acidity; this blend of cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec is sure to age gracefully.
Best Drinking: To 2045

Has the sturdy solidness of the style with ripe sweet fruited yet toned aromas, with fruit to back the initial essence of cabernet and a struck match element in the shadows of the oak. The palate is fleshy and mid palate rich with black fruits and fine grape tannins to match and the length keeps engaging with an interplay of oak, grape tannins, subtle struck match and black fruited leafyness. Youthful finish.

Blockbuster Heytesbury which may well be the best yet. Immensely powerful and super concentrated. The aromas of leafy tobacco-like cabernet with scented cedar with a slightly dusty oak overlay. The fruit is largely off the oldest vineyard in the region. Expertly crated with firmish tannins, fine grained oak and that beautifully expressive fruit. A stunning wine that ranks with the best.
