From one of Margaret River's standout wineries comes this stunning, full blooded Cabernet. The wine exhibits cornerstone Cabernet aromas of ripe blackcurrants, forest fruits, dark plums, bay leaf and mint with subtle spicy elements. Ripe fruit flavours of juicy blackberry, rich dark chocolate and lifted cassis are built around a solid tannin structure. The finish is long and elegant. A real bargain!
Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) Malbec (10%) Petit Verdot (4%)
Awards and Accolades:
GOLD - Royal Melbourne Wine Show 2015
95 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "86% cabernet sauvignon, 10% malbec, 4% petit verdot; from northern Margaret River, 43% estate-grown in Wallcliffe (southern Margaret River) and a small portion of the cabernet (12%) from the Frankland River; destemmed and crushed, static fermenter for 5-7 days, 35% given extended maceration on skins, matured for 14 months in French oak (30% new). As well as significant regional complexity, there is the Bordeaux mix of varieties adding yet more. The great crimson-purple colour telegraphs a steel hand in a velvet glove. The wine has great structure and texture, yet is so refined it is only medium-bodied, with all the expected cassis, blackcurrant and mulberry fruit. Bargain, of course."
93 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front "Proportion. Mouthfeel. Enough flavour without getting carried away. Such traits define this wine. There’s not a lot of heft here but there’s enough to satisfy. There’s blackcurrant and gum leaf, mulberry and earth flavour, creamy oak adding a polished sheen. The tannin profile here is about as ultra fine-grained as you’ll ever encounter. There’s a flush of refreshing acidity too. In all, really, $24 isn’t much to ask for this kind of quality, and drinking enjoyment."
From the Winery
The 2014 vintage was built on a sound foundation of sub-soil moisture with excellent (above average) rainfall throughout the winter of 2013. The rainfall ceased almost completely from the end of November through to the end of March providing ideal growing conditions. Abundant Marri blossom leading up to, and during, harvest kept bird pressure very low, and yields were average for most varieties.
In summary; 2014 was yet another excellent season, continuing the dream run of vintages we have had in Margaret River over the last eight years! The fruit for this blend was predominantly sourced from two Grower vineyards (45%) in the northern sub-regions of Margaret River, along with a significant portion (43%) of Estate-grown fruit from the Wallcliffe sub-region. A small portion (12%) of Cabernet selected from a mature Frankland River vineyard complemented the final blend.
