Chalk Hill Sidetrack Shiraz Grenache 2012

Chalk Hill Sidetrack 2010.gif

75% Shiraz, 25% Grenache.

Sidetrack seemingly has boundless energy on the palate which indicates to me that we should show some restraint before opening it. However, I have a way around this conundrum - the age old and underrated method of relaxing tense wine is, of course, to decant it. Once you've performed this manoeuvre Sidetrack displays unfettered red and black fruit and some luscious licks of cinnamon and cracked pepper. Not as heavy as Jock's Shiraz, the Grenache component in this wine helps to even the palate and add complexity to the finish.

In the cool 2011 vintage, McLaren Vale shiraz-grenache had extra elegance. This has spice, berry and plum against a chocolatey background. Ripe and smooth, with a balanced palate. Tannins are soft.

From the Winery:
Colour: Purple with red hues.

Aromatics: Lifted spice and red berry fruits.

Palate: Crunchy red berry fruits on the palate with savoury spice notes lingering.

Vineyard Notes
The 2011 vintage was a mild growing season. It produced wines that were medium bodied, yet full flavoured from slightly lower yields.

Winemakers Notes
Blending is the key with this wine. The strong Shiraz component demanded more Grenache in 2011. The Grenache brings perfume and bright red fruits which compliment well with darker fruit flavours of the Shiraz.
