Grenache is quickly becoming a critic favourite and McLaren Vale is among the ideal spot for the grape to shine. This 2012 Pirramimma White Label Grenache displays an elegantly perfumed nose of cherries, rose petal, chocolate and spice, while the palate exhibits sweet spicy raspberry, fruit cake, black plum and toffee apple, enhanced by savoury subtle oak.

James Halliday: 94 The grapes come from the 70-year-old estate War Horse Vineyard, the estate 45-year-old Katunga Block and from other old vineyards in the region, fermented in the old concrete vats of the winery, basket-pressed and matured in used American and French barrels. Why use a cork (in this bottle of deplorable quality), I don't know. Brimming with red fruits of every description, it also has tannin structure to provide texture and length. Lovely grenache.
