There are some wines that need an occasion, or a specific dish to warrant drinking them. Malbec is not one of them – I’d open a bottle at the drop of a hat. It’s the combination of rich fleshy fruit and fine tannins that gives it an iron-fist-in-velvet-glove kind of feel. The nose is dark fruit, spice, and dry clay earthiness. The mouthfeel is velvety with a lingering aftertaste.
Awards and Accolades
2013 Vintage: 94 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "Matured in Hungarian oak, with some barrels standing out from the others from the word go, kept on lees, and ultimately selected for this wine. Excellent full crimson colour; Langhorne Creek malbec has always had a special character, with juicy plum/raspberry flavours and soft tannins."
2012 Vintage: 93 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion "Matured for 14 months in Hungarian oak (with lees stirring), the best barrels selected for this wine; the mouthfeel is rounded and velvety, the flavours of confit plum balanced to perfection by savoury acidity."
Tony Love, taste.com.au: 4.5 out of 5 Stars A label notation marks this as a "special release", stickers announce its trophy-winning status at last year's Royal Adelaide Wine Show. Oak is still influential here, yet it twists and turns deftly around a primary set of grapy aromas then more spicy scents, constantly vibrant in colour and fragrance, rich, chewy, fleshy with powder-fine tannins supporting a long finish. Excellent.
