We see plenty of co-blending of two grape varieties in Oz, but we don’t often see Sangiovese and Cabernet in the same blend. The Dal Zotto’s have taken their Italian know how and created a wine that highlights the best of both varieties. The Sangiovese provides a cherry tang while the Cabernet lends black fruit before a medium bodied palate is full of plush sweet red fruit and hints of tobacco. It has Cabernet’s excellent tannin structure and is the jackpot with plates of Salumi and cheeses.
Dal Zotto Sangiovese Cabernet is vivid purple with a youthful hue; an absolutely text book combination of the two varieties that have proved their pedigree in Italy; the Sangiovese provides high notes of sour cherry and brambly character, while the Cabernet provides dark fruits in abundance; medium-bodied but seriously structured and generously fruited, offering a gorgeous core of sweet red fruits, rolled tobacco leaf and fine powdery tannins to conclude; salumi and roasted meats will wither before the precision of this wine.
From the Winery
The Dal Zotto story began when Otto came to the King Valley in the late 1960’s and met Elena. Otto was immediately entranced, not just by his future wife but by the beauty of the region, strikingly similar to his home in north east Italy. Tobacco was the crop of choice at the time, but in the back of Otto and Elena’s minds was the dream of vineyards. This dream became a reality in 1987 with their new property in Cheshunt and the planting of the first vines. Over time, more vines followed including the introduction of Italian varieties in 1994.
A second generation of Dal Zottos have joined Otto and Elena in their ongoing vision with sons Michael as Winemaker and Christian as Marketing Manager. And with plenty of grandchildren, the Dal Zotto story is truly just beginning…
