Gold Medal Winner: 'Maîtres Conseils en Vins de France'
In all that's good! What a gem this is! Here's a real flash in the pan, a shining jewel atop of the heap of cheaper Bordeaux flooding the market. Impeccably smooth, even-tempered and characterful; this shows a roundness and depth of a more aged wine at a stunningly good price. Dourthe No 1 is deep garnet red in colour. The intensely perfumed bouquet of red fruits and blackberries reveals spicy, delicately toasted notes, bringing additional charm. Initially direct on the palate, the wine is full and aromatic. The structure is well balanced, with clearly visible, round and delicate tannins, and freshness, which brings attractive depth to the wine. The long finish combines fruit intensity with beautifully integrated oaky notes. As inexpensive Claret goes, this is the lion's Mayne! - and an absolute bargain!!!
The Grand Terroirs label was launched by Dourthe and today remains one of the top selling Bordeaux in France. It is a blend of select parcels from Dourthe’s vineyards that, after vat and bottle ageing, will offer the right balance between rich, complex fruit and mellow tannins to allow early and easy drinking.
Past Accolades and Awards:
Gold Medal: 'Maîtres Conseils en Vins de France'
Tim Aitkin, The Observer: Dourthe N° 1 2001 Red "This Merlot-based claret isn't the cheapest Bordeaux Brand on the market, but it's consistently the best. The extra £1 is more than reflected in the quality of the stuff in the bottle - soft and fleshy, with subtle oak and a core of sweat cassis fruit.”
Anthony Rose, The Independent: “Can Bordeaux play catch-up with the New World by coming up with modern brands that can add another string to the château bow? Easier said than done. Dourthe is the most successful player in this market, with its creditable, blackcurranty Dourthe N°1.”
