Poggio Argentiera Morellino di Scansano Bellamarsilia 2012
A deep ruby in colour. On the nose, aromas of red cherries and raspberries. Zesty and fresh on the palate leading to a lingering, crisp finish. drink with veal stuffed manicotti with a yellow pepper pesto, a sun-dried tomato calzone with spicy sausages and okra or a chunk of pecorino romano cheese.
Very appealing red fruit and black cherry notes, characteristic of Maremma Sangiovese, shine through in this fresh, forward and appealing red sustained by solid yet mellow structure. The combination of firm tannins and non-aggressive, round texture is very appealing.
Until the 2009 vintage, this is a blend of 85% Sangiovese + 10% Ciliegiolo + 5% Alicante, from the younger, high-density vines around 4 miles from the coastline. As of the 2010, it is 85% Sangiovese + 15% Ciliegiolo. In Gianpaolo Paglia's words, "The reason we took out that 5% of Alicante was, it made the wine a little less airy, light and fragrant with fresh red fruit aromas, as a Morellino should be. In my opinion, this is the best blend for our Bellamarsilia, and the 2010 is the finest entry-level Morellino we've produced so far." Pronounced red fruit and black cherry characteristic of Maremma Sangiovese shine through in a fresh, appealing, crisp and forward red sustained by solid yet mellow structure. As the estate's everyday Maremma offering, with a production averaging 150,000 bottles per annum and amazing value, Bellamarsilia is the Paglias' calling card and ideally represents the youthful charm of Morellino.
Poggio Argentiera is owned by agronomist Gianpaolo Paglia, born and bred in Maremma, and English marketing manager Justine Keeling. They bought the 6 hectare estate, situated near the town of Grosetto in southern Tuscany, in 1997 and immediately set about making Morellino di Scansano whilst at the same time planting new vineyards using local varieties such as Alicante. They are assisted in their efforts by winemaker Antonio Camillo and a modern winery and warehouse facility were added in 2002. The vines are grown organically on sandy soils only a few kilometres from the sea and experience a very precise micro-climate including hot temperatures and little rainfall during the growing season. Morellino is the name of both a type of cherry and the local name for Sangiovese and Argentiera has acquired a reputation as one of the leading wineries in Scansano. Bellamarsilia is matured for 6 months: one third in tank, one third in large oak vats and one third in small American oak barrels.
