Saltram Winemaker's Selection Shiraz Tempranillo 2010

Saltram Winemaker

The nose is fragrant with aromas reminiscent of juniper and blueberries, violets and freshly crushed bay leaves. Hints of savoury spice and a flinty mineral lift are also evident.

The spice and mineral notes are also evident on the palate. 'Granite' tannins contribute to the fine, linear structure while the flavours of redcurrants, citrus rind and cranberries give the wine a lingering vibrancy. The restrained use of oak enabled the tannins to mature bringing subtlety to the wine while gently adding aromatic complexity.

The Saltram Winemaker's Selection Shiraz Tempranillo has been handcrafted from small parcels harvested from the vineyard that surrounds the Saltram Estate in the Barossa Valley. Winemaker Shavaughn Wells' aim is to combine the strengths of each variety. Shiraz offers richness and depth while Tempranillo provides the 'bones' - with its firm tannins providing structure and length.

The Winemaker's Selection Shiraz Tempranillo was grown on the Saltram Estate vineyard, which is situated just outside the township of Angaston in the Barossa. The vineyard generally has a westerly aspect which results in reduced sunlight hours per day, and consequently longer cooler ripening periods for flavour development. It's distinguished from other Barossa Valley vineyards due to its higher altitude of 347 m - among the highest in the Barossa Valley. The aspect and the altitude combined with the soil profile all contribute to the unique characters expressed through the fruit from this vineyard.
