Torbreck The Steading Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2012

Torbreck The Steading.gif

Torbreck's Steading is a remarkable wine, not necessarily because it’s vines were some of the very few that survived the vine pull scheme of the early 80's, or that some are over a century old. It’s that this wine, more so than any other in Torbreck's stable, is an indication of the unique value and potential of the Barossa's most protected and ancient varieties. – Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. The blend of this trio has yielded a wine that plays up to each varietals strengths with a complex yet structurally solid drink. Dark red with a hint of purple the nose is delicate layers of truffles, five spice and fresh violets with heavier core notes of liquorice, leather and herbs. The flavour is clean and elegant with a touch of crushed cherries, rich dark earth and cedar in perfect harmony with a balanced acidity and ridiculously smooth tannins. This is a wine that will continue to evolve over time, providing plenty of reasons to love it in the future, however it will also drink just as well now. I’d say get at least two, one for now and one for then…
