Balgownie Estate Black Label Shiraz 2008 |
| |
|
|
The grapes for the Balgownie Estate Black Label are sourced from Bendigo, Central Victoria & Yarra Valley. This helps to represent the very best of each of the regions surrounding the main estate vineyards. The 2008 Shiraz combines the powerful ripe fruit flavours & spice of Central and Western Victoria. The Shiraz was co-fermented with a small amount of viognier which makes the wine soft and supple.
Balgownie Estate is one of Australia's great small vineyards famed for its long lived Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Established in 1969 by the highly regarded winemaker Stuart Anderson, the vineyard and winery are located at Maiden Gully near the historic gold mining town of Bendigo, just 150km northwest of Victoria's capital city Melbourne.
Balgownie Estate's Bendigo vineyard was originally planted by local pharmacist Stuart Anderson in 1969. The initial plantings consisted of five acres each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and these varieties are still the mainstay of the vineyard today.
The vineyard is planted on alluvial clay soils that are low in fertility but provide good moisture retention. These soils naturally limit yields and produce grapes with depth and intensity. The Bendigo Climate is characterised by its continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The warm days and cool nights during the ripening period are ideal for producing intense and age-worthy red wines.
'This drinks well from the start to the finish. Indeed you'd probably describe it as a pretty sort of wine. It tastes of crushed blueberries and blackberries. French vanilla. pepper and spice. It's medium-bodied and fresh with firmish tannins that you can chomp down on. A little raw perhaps, but time will take care of that. DRINK 2010 - 2013. SCORE:90' - (Big Red Wine Book - 2010/11)
