Named for the route Major Thomas Mitchell took through Victoria in 1836, Major’s Line reveals the savouriness and medium body of Bendigo shiraz in a good vintage. The sweet, plummy, spicy fruit flavour sits well with the savoury notes that seem to come from both the American oak and the fruit itself. The sweet fruit and soft, fine tannins mean easy drinking now, though the wine has the flavour concentration and structure to cellar for four or five years.
Past Accolades and Awards:
James Halliday: 93 Crimson-purple; the grapes from the Norris Vineyard at Faraday, providing flavours that have always been distinct from the other BlackJack vineyards; it has lively, almost juicy, red berry fruits at the core of a darker berry framework; the finish is fresh, the tannins fine and balanced.
"92 Points. Blackjack’s Major’s Line Shiraz is aged in small American oak for 24 months. Bottled unfined and only minimally filtered. Like this. It has a number of bases covered. Pepper spice, cherry-plummed fruit, a glide of toasty vanillin oak and a juicy, refreshing finish. It shows some alcohol on the finish but it’s generally lively, generous and blessed with both spice and fruit. Value." - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
