Elephant-like in proportion, this is a full-flavoured chunky red that retains a smooth, soft texture. Flavours of dark plum, sweet red and blue-berries are complemented by toasty oak hints followed by fine-grained tannins and a lingering finish.
Awards and Accolades
90 Points - Sam Kim, Wine Front "Youthful, vibrant and fruit expressive, the beautifully lifted bouquet shows blackberry, blueberry jam, floral and spice aromas with a hint of chocolate notes. The palate is juicy and flavoursome, and delivers pristine fruit flavours and silky texture, elegantly structured by fine tannins. Up front and friendly. At its best: now to 2020."
Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front "It’s a major hit in the real world of retail wine sales. It’s from Langhorne Creek, it calls itself a big wine with lots of oak... Sweet blackberry and plum, a floral lift, clean-as-a-whistle presentation of fruit flavour, and a general softness to the mouthfeel. Said softness may indeed have been aided by oak but there’s not a great deal of oak flavour, save for a gentle resiny character. In all though you’d have to say that it’s played to perfection in mouthfeel terms, flavour terms, and marketing terms."
From the Winery
Sourced from a selection of mature, dry-grown vineyards in Langhorne Creek managed by Jim Zerella. The fruit is partially hand-harvested before de-stemming and cool fermentation in small two tonne open fermenters with regular hand plunging. Matured in seasoned French oak (20% new French) for six months before bottling with minimal filtration and sulphur addition.
The Elephant in the Room wines are proudly large in scale and expansive in flavour. Ignoring fashion and braving the scorn of “wine thought police”, Elephant in the Room was created to give consumers exactly what they want – full bodied and mouth-filling wines that deliver maximum pleasure. Sourced from low yielding vineyards in Langhorne Creek and partially matured in French Oak before final blending and bottling by Corey Ryan.
